Thomas Ahern described his brother as Dennis Ahern, parish of Clonmore, County Tipperary. I haven't been able to find a family with sons both Thomas and Dennis. I do know that Dennis was married to Honora Egan, daughter of William Egan and Catherine Maher of Loughmore. I believe I have found their marriage record in Loughmore on 6 Feb 1843. I have also found a Dennis baptized 15 Oct 1812 from Ballysorrell, the son of Dennis Ahern and Margaret Bennett. I haven't found a Thomas in that family though. Thomas was younger; the only date I have found for his birth is on his headstone, 1829.

I'd like to be sure I'm looking in the right place at least, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi, what info do you have about Thomas? Age? parents? wife? children? years? emigration?

  • Hello Patricia,

Thomas' age is tricky. His headstone gives 1829. Census records indicate 1828, 1821, and 1823. So there's certainly a bit of uncertainty. His date of emigration is also uncertain, but he married Johanna Pendergast in New York in about 1850 before moving to Indiana. His oldest child was born in New York in 1851, and his next known child was born in Indiana about 1853. I have church records for his childrens' baptisms in Indiana beginning in 1855, and census records for him in Indiana from 1860 until his death in 1892. Nothing mentions his parents names. His known children are Dennis (b. 1851 NY), Mary (b. 1853 Indiana), Margaret (b. 1855 Indiana), Hugo Michael (b. 1857 Indiana), Thomas (b. 1858 Indiana), Anastasia (b. 1862 Indiana), John (b. 1865 Indiana), and Eva (b. 1870 Indiana).

In 1867, Thomas placed an advertisement in a Boston paper looking for his brother, "Denis O'Hern, of the parish of Clonmore, county Tipperary, Ireland."

It appears Dennis had died before that advertisement, but he and his wife had settled in Baltimore. They had a son, Dennis, b. 1844 Ireland, though he does not appear in US records. The remaining known children all appear in US records - a daughter Catherine, b. 1845 Ireland, William b. 1847 Ireland, James b. 1854 b. Baltimore, Maggie, 1855 b. Baltimore, Patrick b.1856 Baltimore, and Michael b.1858 Baltimore. Dennis' wife, Honora Egan, daughter of William Egan and Catherine Maher of Loughmore, had her parents' names and location in her obituary.

Thank you so much for your response. I feel like I have enough information to find Thomas in Ireland yet he eludes me!
