Hi

I am looking for any information on relatives of James Mccusker born Fintona 1827.  The name seems to be sometimes spelt Macoscar.

James marries my great grandfathers sister Mary Sweeney in 1857 Donacavey Parish.  James father is Owen Mccusker and mother Mary Mellin??  Marys father is Alexander Sweeney.

The couple move to Scotland, Cadder, Lanarkshire.  Their children are Margaret, James, Annie, Michael, Jane, Patrick and James Joseph.  Margaret seems to be the only child that marries.  She marries William Byrne and they are living at Dunlavin, Wicklow in 1911 census.  The children of William and Margaret then move back to Scotland.

Any infor would be gladly appreciated.

  • Theresa,

Tracing these families with certainty may be difficult. Donacavey RC parish records don’t start till 1857 so you are unlikely to find baptisms for James or Mary.

James’s mother’s maiden looks to be Mullin or Mullan. That’s a common name in Tyrone. The bride’s mother was Mary (in latin – Maria) McKenna. Here’s a link to the marriage (the first in the register).

James & Mary both lived in Fintona as did their parents.

Do you know what Owen McCusker or Alexander Sweeney’s occupations were?

  • Hi

Thank you for your reply.  Owen Mccusker was a crofter and Alexander Sweeney was a sawyer.  I have posted Alexander Sweeney separately and you kindly gave me some info on family recently.  I thought someone might be connected to the Mccuskers that still live in area.  I did not realise that this is such a common surname for that area.

    Kind regards

    Theresa

  • Theresa,

I looked at Griffiths Valuation for Fintona in 1860. There were 5 McCusker households listed. Patrick & Rose (separate households) in Main St; Fergus & Susan in King St (separate households) and Mary in Mill St.

Usually when a woman is listed in Griffiths she’s a widow. So possibly Mary in Mill St is Owen’s widow. There are several possible deaths for Mary in the period 1864 – 1877, registered in Omagh, which could be her. They are not on-line free yet, so you would need to pay to view them on the GRONI website.
