my great grandfather, Patrick Tormey, was born in Delvin in 1840.  His parents were Patrick Tormey and Mary Rooney Tormey.

I would like to know where Patrick Tormey senior and Mary Rooney Tormey are buried, if that is possible.

I am coming to Delvin on July 1 to see where they lived and would like to visit the graves also.

thank you

If you have not done so already, could you complete this form regarding your trip to Ireland  https://www.irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

The baptismal and marriage records for Delvin/Killeagh RC parish have a "no record" gap between 1813-1829

I then searched for baptismal records for children of Patrick Tormey and Mary Rooney and found a Margaret in 1831 and an Ellen in 1834. Likely the couple was married in the "gap" period and possibly there were children before Margaret. I then located two other records and the dates raise the question that there may have been two Patrick Tormey/Mary Rooney couples in the parish. I found a record for a Patrick in February. I provided a link to the actual parish register and then located a Thomas four months later. Another link provided. Maybe you have some thoughts.

    Patrick February 27 1839

    Thomas June 27 1839

I then searched for civil death records for Patrick and Mary up until 1900 and did not find any good leads. Keep in mind, civil registration of deaths started in 1864. My guess is that Patrick and Mary may have died before 1864 and possibly during the famine or shortly after. Finding a burial site going back 160 years or more would be very difficult.

This link may be helpful Possibly the RC church would have some suggestions.

  • Roger, thank you very much.  I really appreciate your efforts.  The church records are pretty difficult to read.

The children of Patrick Tormey and Mary Rooney that I have....just written down from someone's memory long ago, not church records,.....are John 1825, Anne 1826, Thomas 1829, Margaret 1831, Ellen 1835 and Patrick 1840.

I would agree that Patrick and Mary may have died before 1864.

Thanks for what you found and shared.  From Griffith's valuation I found where Patrick and Mary lived east of Delvin so I'll go take a look at that, take some pictures for my brothers, sisters and cousins.

I thought I had filled out the meet and greet form previously but I had no response so I'll do it again.  We're passing through Dublin for a couple of days so I thought I better come take a look at Delvin. I'm traveling with my wife and she also wants to see Fore Abbey and Trim Castle if we can fit it all into a day.

  • Hi Jim!

I promised a link and I noticed I did not attach. In any event, see below. We don't have volunteers in all locales so sometimes we can't do the meet and greet.

  • Thank you.  I had already checked the cemeteries but found nothing.

Not worried about the meet and greet.  We hired a driver so that will help.  He isn't from the immediate area but that's fine too.

Headed to San Francisco airport in an hour or so so will be in Dublin tomorrow.  We're dropping off a granddaughter in Dublin then heading down to Bordeaux and Biarritz.  End of the next week we'll be back in Dublin then off to Delvin.

I'm looking forward to it.  Thanks for your help.
