Bridget Seery's father, Patrick Seery is recorded in the 1825 Tithe Applotment Books of the National Archives of Ireland in the Civil Parish of Dysert. I have found a Tithe Applotment Books entry for Patrick Carney in 1837. It is in Cuilleenoolagh in Dysart in Westmeath. The six children are : Mary Carney (born c. 1833);  Patrick (born c. 1838); Matthew (born 6 January 1840); Ann (born c. 1840); Ellen (born c. 1845); and Michael (born 25 August 1849), all in Westmeath. The family is thought to have emigrated via Liverpool to Boston aboard the ship "Plymouth Rock" which docked in Boston on 18 April 1851 according to the ship's manifest found on the website www.dunbrody.com listing 9 persons named Carney. This does not include the name Matthew Carney but does add two female Carney relatives who accompanied the family.

I have found Naturalization records for the father Patrick, and for sons, Matthew and Michael Carney. The father Patrick's naturalization petition appeared before the Police Court in Essex County, Massachusetts, stating his desire for citizenship on 10 October 1853. U.S. laws require a waiting period of five years before a resident may apply for citizenship. Therefore in March 1857 Patrick Carney applied for citizenship in the Essex County Court of  Common Pleas, and was granted U.S. citizenship. He died 25 March 1859 in Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts and his widow Bridget died there on 23 November 1870.

The three male children married in Lawrence. Patrick, the son was a carpenter, who married Jane Bradley (born in Ireland) on 4 May 1862. They are parents of 4 children. Matthew, the son was a grocer in partnership with his brother Michael, and they became distributors of beer, wine, and distilled spirits in Lawrence, later opening a brewery in Manchester, N.H. about 25 miles from Lawrence. Matthew applied for U.S. citizenship 19 October 1867 in Essex County Superior Court. In his declaration he stated his arrival in the U.S. was on 20 April 1850 (which may be an error). He was elected Alderman of Ward 4 in Lawrence in 1873. He married Sarah Ellen Quinn (born 22 November 1849 in S. Newmarket, Rockingham County, N.H.)  on 18 May 1875. The son Michael, filed a petition for U.S. citizenship on 14 October 1867 in Essex County Superior Criminal Court. He married Lena Florence Guptill (born c. 1849 in Maine, U.S.A.) on 4 August 1887 in Lawrence, MA.

The daughter Mary Carney, born circa 1833, married Thomas Gilshenan (Gilson) who was born in 1833 in Lawrence, MA on 7 March 1859 in Lawrence. She lived to age 93 in Lawrence.

Patrick Carney, the father who died in 1859, is recorded on his Death Certificate as being a Farmer. The three sons, Patrick, Matthew, and Michael are all buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lawrence, Essex county, Massachusetts and the parents are also buried there according to the Cemetery offices.

It is known that Matthew Carney worked for a time in the Washington Mill, one of the newest businesses in Lawrence, before he and his brother started their partnership. The firm M. Carney & Brother, Inc. endured into the early 1950s although there were no longer any Carney descendants who worked there then. Many of the descendants of Matthew Carney & Sarah Ellen Quinn Carney moved to Westchester county, New York & NYC & one to Sarasota, FL during the early part of the 20th century. One Quinn daughter & one Quinn son remained in Rockingham County, NH where Patrick Quinn from Galway settled in 1846.  Several daughters married & remained in the area. (Patrick Quinn is the father of Sarah Ellen Quinn whose home in South Newmarket remained in the family until the early 1970s). The siblings of Matthew Carney remained in the Lawrence, MA area (25 miles from South Newmarket). The Quinn family of Patrick's five siblings all immigrated from Galway into the USA before the Carney arrival and settled in NH, Maine, Nebraska, and possibly Massachusetts.

The Carney family and the Quinn family are Roman Catholic. I am seeking further historical data about the family and our ancestors.

  • I am interested in your SEERY connection as I am researching my SEERY name.

I am a descendent of Thomas Seery bc 1828 Roscommon.

Thomas emmigrated to Australia in 1860 and sponsored a Michael Seery bc 1830 from Ireland to Australia in 1861.

Michael's parents were Michael SEERY and Anne COWLEY (Dublin) but I am yet to confirm the relationship of the Australian Thomas and Michael particularly since one is recorded as coming from ROSCOMMON and the other from Castletown Geoghegan, WESTMEATH

Any information relating to your Bridget SEERY will be keenly sought

    Terry Seery
