Hello IrelandXO folks,

I'm hoping I might be able to get a little help locating an address found on baptismal records in the Roman Catholic parish of Kinnitty (also known as Roscomroe) in the 1830s and 1840s (for the Whelan family). Their address is recorded as "Gapglen". I've searched for Gapglen in Griffith's, Townlands.ie, the Tithe Applotment Books, Google maps, and a general Google search and have come up with nothing.

Any help in locating Gapglen would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Janice

  • Hello Miriam,

Thanks so much for your reply! I think "Gap of Glendine" is an excellent suggestion - I'll see what more I can find out.

    Thanks again,

    Janice

  • Miriam, I'm wondering if I might ask you one more question about the townland of Glendine. Do you know why it doesn't appear in the Tithe Applotment Books (online)? In fact, the entire civil parish of Kinnitty seems to be missing in King's County. I'm wondering if the Tithe was never taken there or if perhaps the records just didn't make it into the online version.

    Many thanks,

    Janice

  • Janice, I've just seen this message by googling Gapglen in County Offaly.  I have been researching a Whelan family that I share DNA with and have wondered about this place name for some time.  They originiated in Offaly and went to the US.  I would love to connect with you Janice and compare research.  Thanks.
