Hi Everybody

I am enquirying about great great grandfather Arthur Shaw. He joined the 69th Foot County West Meath on 7th December 1827. He stated that he was aged nineteen and born in the Parish of Cloon County Leitrim. He was discharged 13th February1849 aged forty.  During his service he spent seven years in the West Indies and seven months in North America. He married Julia Horrigan 6th December 1842 at St Thomas Liverpool Lancs. On the marriage certificate Arthur's father is recorded as Robert Shaw occupation farmer. Julia's father also a farmer is John Horrigan. Their first child was John registered Liverpool 1842. He may have died as I can find no further reference to him. Their second child Elizabeth was registered in Stockport Lancs in 1847. They went on to have three more children in Tasmania Australia. Charles circa 1851. Arthur 1853 and Susan 1856. The family came out to Tasmania on the "Bangalore" which left Portsmouth on 6th January 1850. Arthur was a Pensioner Guard for the convicts. Arthur was buried 19th September 1860 at Green Ponds Tasmania. Julia moved to New Zealand and died 29th September 1896. Her death certificate said she was born in Cork Ireland and was 23 when she married Arthur Shaw. Hoping you may assist with Arthur and Julia's origins in Ireland. Kind Regards. Larraine

I presume Arthur Shaw was Church of Ireland? Records for the Church of Ireland parish of Cloone were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin. I did not find any Tithe records for Cloone civil parish.

Based on your message, Julia was likely born around 1819. I searched on two different sites (Roots Ireland and www.irishgenealogy.ie) and found two possible leads but both records are later than 1819. There were no records around 1819.

One of our volunteers, Shane Wilson, determined that the Tithe records for Cloone civil parish Co. Leitrim were mis-indexed and included with Clooney civil parish Co. Clare. Shane located four Shaw records in the Cloone parish Tithe listings including a Robert Shaw in Clooncumber townland. This Robert could be the father of Arthur.
