Born in November 1825 to John Cooke and Catherine Wakefield of Curraugh, Aughrim, County Galway. In the property valuation, "widow Wakefield" is listed in a 1-acre lot on their property which might be the MIL/grandmother? In 1852, he was a witness to a vagrant caught sleeping in their barn[Petty Court Sessions 1852 Kilclooney Parish). In 1863, he married Anne Hynes/Hines and then emigrated to the US with his wife and MIL. 1st son John H was born en route. A year later, my great-great-grandmother Margaret K was born in NJ, USA.

The Cooke ~30-acre farm was north of Aughrim. There's a lake on the property, Cooke's lough, near Coololla. Unlike most people in the area, they actually owned the property. I'm searching for how that happened. I read that the previous owner in the area left for Australia. It might also be a land grant. The Cooke's were protestant and new to the area. The petty court records suggest they had cows, sheep, pigs, donkeys that frequently got out to the neighbors' property destroying the neighboring farms' crops, and they also farmed a small section of potatoes that were stolen a few times. I'm not sure if the farm stayed in the family after David left in 1863 and John died in 1865.

Religious Affiliation is Church of Ireland

Cook.-- On Thursday, April 4, 1895, David Cook, aged 69 years.

Relatives and friends of the family, also members of Lincoln Lodge, No. 126, I.O.O.F., and Samuel Thomas Division No 2, P. R. R. B. Association, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral on Sunday, April 7, from the residence of his son, John. Cook, 159 Halladay Street apt 21 at 2:39 p.m.
NOTICE--To the members of Lincoln Lodge, No. 126, I. O. O. F, Brothers-- You are hereby notified that a special meeting will be held at the lodge room on Sunday, April 7, 1895, at 1 p.m. for the purpose of attending the funeral of our deceased brother David Cook. Members of sister lodges invited. By order,

Hi -- I am doing research on my Cooke ancestors, who came from Ballinasloe. My GGF was John Cook, born on October 9, 1845 in Ballinasloe, and arrived in Boston on July 21, 1854. His father was John Cook, born on March 1, 1818 in Ballinasloe, and arrived in Bosotn on April 7, 1849. This John married an Isabella Wiley. I believe his parents were John Cooke and Catherine Wakefield. They were married in Aughrim on May 18, 1815 (Church of Ireland is sending me certificate). That John Cooke died on January 25, 1865, and I believe his wife also died in January 1865. What I am trying to find is evidence that my second GGF is indeed the son of John Cooke and Catherine Wakefield, and anything more about them.

Some references have John Cooke born in 1791 or 1792 in England. Not sure the basis for this and I have seen no proof.

The bio above would link David Cooke as a brother to my second GGF, with the exception that it mentions the wife of John Cooke as Margaret not Catherine Wakefield. I believe a cousin was yet another John Cooke, who was born on September 3, 1824, and was the son of George and Susanna (his marriage record indicates he married in February 1871 at age 43 not 47).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi!

I started with the name Margaret from another cousin who wasn't really tracing this line. After further research, I changed my notes to Catherine, but hadn't updated it here until now. Thank you. I think it's certainly possible as the dates would line up. If you do get the marriage record, please attach it to John. I would also recommend checking the petty court records. It seems like lots of people liked to file disputes with their neighbors so I found a few names there.

If you haven't seen it already, you may enjoy reading "The Cookes of the Cavaliers". It goes over the migration from England and the genetic matches between different Cooke's all over Ireland including a small section on our Clontuskert Cooke branch. If you are on GEDmatch, you may find me. Although it will be difficult to tell if we are 5th cousins or 6th cousins.

So glad to hear from you -- Any suggestion as to how I can find the birth record of the John Cooke that was born on March 1, 1818? That would be the key it seems to me.
