Hello.  My name is John Devenney. I live in suburb of Philadelphia.

My maternal great grandmother was Jane Montgomery(B:1862 in Donegal, possibly Carndavagh), daughter of George Montgomery(B: approx 1841, poss in Knockalla;  married to Mary McIlhinney in Clondavaddog1862). Was told, as a child, that George was related to Field Marshall Mintgomery. Trying to fill out the Montgomery branch.

Any advice on which church records to confirn  would be appreciated.  Thanks

John

  • Hi John, Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out. Below is information relating to Jane Mongomery and her family. I am not sure how much information you have at the moment but this was sourced from the RootsIreland website. I would recommend confirming the information also up on irishgeneology.ie for dates after 1864 when Civil Registration started. It is unfortunate but there is very limited records from the 1800s up to this time. Kind regards Seamus Callaghan XO

Thank a million Roger McDonnell for sourcing the record attached and for supplying information 👍

Roger - I checked Roots Ireland and did find the 1862 baptismal record for Jane Montgomery in Clondavaddog Church of Ireland parish.. She was born December 21 1862 and baptized January 1 1863. Father George and mother Mary (no last name shown). They lived in Leatmore. Jane had a younger brother Robert born In Leatmore in December 1864.

The family then moved to a townland called Anny and I located five more children: Mary, George, Catherine, John and Fanny all in Rathmullan registrar district.

Hi John, above are jusy some location links relating to your Montgomery and McElhinney families that may be of interest.

Unfortunately it may be simply too far back to make a records connection between your own family and Field Marshall Montgomerys, but at least it will you show whereabout exactly they lived back in the day.

Checking out his family tree and using the Rootsireland website might prove beneficial if more interested in the family connection.

    Best Regards

  • Thank you very much Roger and Seamus for your efforts. Yes, I agree that the brick wall definitely seems to be the 1700s and early 1800s. Prior to that, there is a tremendous amount of data on all of the major Montgomery branches( about 6 branches) as far back as 800 AD but the Montgomerys had so many kids that’s hard to connect the dots. Most stayed in England and Scotland but George’s ancestors went to Ireland and the lack of documentation is the hurtle. I’m thinking that the only chance I have is tracking the Irish Montgomerys thru the church records. Again thanks. John

  • Hi John, If like you say, you want to chance tracing Mongomery families further back though Church Records, it will be handy first off to know what Church Records are available throughout County Donegal with regards to the various locations or their religious interests.

You will notice that the nearer you come to the mid 1700’s to early 1800’s the less records are available for Church of Ireland in the Parishes of Clondavaddog and Killgarvan.

    Regards Seamus

  • Figures. Classic example of the luck of the Irish in reverse. I guess that I’ll take it as far as I can and then move on to my other Irish ancestors(Cotter, Mullen, Malone, Joyce, McElhinney). Whatever information, I find information I find on any of them, I will gladly share with you. Thanks Seamus. John

John In regard to the relationship with Marshal Montgomery, remember hearing this comment also. Attach detail of Jane's brother John. He was married to Matilda Morrison, her mother was Rebecca Kilpatrick, (great-grandaunt). When researching found that John and Matilda returned to Donegal and then emigrated for a second time.
