James Colgan was born in 1812, probably in Meath, though his gravestone says "Dublin". My mom always asserted that he was born NEAR Dublin, as he was not from the city. He was a farmer. He married Elizabeth O'Connell in 1845 in Summerhill, Meath, according to a marriage certificate that was found. However, it is not 100% certain that this is the correct marriage certificate. They had one daughter before emigrating to the U.S. in 1848, named Anna. Her birth year was 1846, according to records, but we have not found a baptismal certificate for her either. There are DNA matches to Summerhill. Elizabeth O'Connell's birth has not been confirmed either.
