/  When John J Birmingham was born on June 1, 1845, in Lusmagh, Offaly, Ireland, his father, James, was 30 and his mother, Bridget, was 25. In 1847 They emigrated to the US with his older Sister Bridget and older Brother Patrick. They settled first In New Jersey and later in NY. His Parents had four additional children born in the United States named William, Robert, Mary and Julia who were born in the United States.

He joined the Union Army at 17 years of age and fought in the US Civil War. He was wounded and recovering in Washington, D.C. He was at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC when President Lincoln was shot. He was also part of the honor guard for Lincolns Casket in our Capital building. After the war he became a Tanner and then a Laborer. He Had quite a life.

He had four sons and two daughters with Delia Higgins between 1875 and 1884. He died on October 11, 1939, in Kingston, New York, at the age of 94.
