My third times Great Grandparents were Walter Adams born about 1802 (parents Peter Adams / Catherine Connolly) and Bridget Thornton born about 1824  (Thorington, possible parents John and Mary ) , the only information I have is they came from Ireland to Scotland .............. whilst in Ireland they had the following children : Mary about 1845, John about 1847, Patrick about 1849, Walter about 1851 and then moved to Scotland and had Bridget and Joseph.

I have been unable to find what part of Ireland they are from - I have had my DNA tested and the results on the site shows my Genetic community as being Galway - Connacht Irish ....

Any help finding a connection for my Irish ancestors would be really appreciated

  • If Bridget and Joseph happened to have been born in Scotland in 1855 or from 1861 onwards, the Scottish birth certificate should record where and when the parents married. You can view them on Scotlandspeople.

Have you checked all the Scottish censuses 1851 onwards in case the place of birth shows something more than Ireland? (Also on Scotlandspeople).

Many Irish people who moved to Scotland claimed under the Poor Law. In those cases the Poor Law file often records the parish of origin in Ireland as well as next of kin. Poor Law records for the Glasgow area are in the Mitchell Library. They will do a look up for you for a small fee.

  • Thanks for the suggestion ..... unfortunately Bridget was born in 1853 so only a baptism record, Joseph according to census records in 1861 and 1871 show him as being 4 and 14 .... no records found for him after this ........... and I am unable to find a birth record for him ?? !

  • I notice the family were in Kilmadock, Perthshire in the 1861 & 1871 census. I also note a birth for an Andrew Adams in Kilmadock in 1858. Could Joseph have been a middle name? Might he had been given the first name Andrew? (Obviously the birth cert will tell you if it’s the right family).
