I've found my Denehan ancestors on the 1911 census (Edenderry) but cannot find them on the 1901, even though I know from family members that they always lived in the general Edenderry area. I've searched by townland, and even searched by Christian names/ages but no luck, both for Offaly and also into Kildare. Anyone know if parts of the county weren't covered in the census? I found one member of the family, Mary Kate, as she wasn't at home but in Rathvilla/Rathclonbrackan as a servant. The rest of the family is: Peter and Mary Denehan and their children Pat, Tommy, Ellen, Peter, Stephen, Jim and Annie. I've other records for them, including all the children's birth/baptismal records - just drawing a blank for 1901. Thanks.

Margaret:
I also could not locate your family in the 1901 census. The return for the town of Edenderry is there but your Denehans are not included. I even looked for Lenehan, Benehan and Tenehan because sometimes the Canadian company who transcribed the record for the National Archives did not correctly transcribe the first letter of the surname.
In my experience transcribing the 1901 census www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census there are townlands missing or individual families missing, The percentage is very small but it does happen.

Thanks Roger.
Yes, I tried the variants too! And I also noticed on the 1911 census that while my family are there and correctly named on Form A, on the Form B1, my great grandfather's name is incorrectly given as Peter Donogher. I've tried that variant too for 1901 but no joy. It's useful to me though to have another pair of eyes search and come to the same conclusion, so thanks for your comment
All the best

Found them!
Just to follow up on my post from a couple of years ago - and in the hope that this might help someone else
Using the newly-released Irish Civil Records which went online last week, I found the birth of one of my grand aunts - Anne - only to find she was born in Edenderry Workhouse. The family had lost the family farm in the 1890s sometime but I hadn't realised they ended up in the workshouse.
So back I went to the 1901 census and found the whole family in the workhouse. The reason I hadn't found them, of course, is because people in the workhouse were only listed by initials, not names.
So if you have anyone who has apparnetly gone missing, it might be no harm to try the workhouse.
And I now have a whole pile more 'stuff' to investigate as to how they got there.....other than family lore.
