    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I believe this is the civil birth record for Kate. Capragh townland is in Ballymachugh civil parish. Likely she went to England and was married there and maybe died in England.

  • You ask about a marriage for Kate. I can’t see one in the Irish, Scottish or English records. What does the 1895 birth certificate say with regard to Walter’s father? Is he named? How was Kate named? Was she Kate Ortmayer, formerly Donohoe? Or is she Kate Donohue?

I see that Walter’s middle name was Julius. I also see a Julius Ortmayer in the 1891 census, who was a German pork butcher who evidently moved around the country a bit. He had a child born in Torquay and he married a Scots lady named Margaret in Leith in 1887. I wondered if he might be the child’s father (given the rarity of the surname and the fact that Walter’s middle name was Julius).

I also see a Julius Ortmayer , chef, aged 39, working in a London hotel in the 1911 census who said he was single.

  • Thanks for the information.   I have confirmed that the Kate you have found is the correct person, I searched" FamilySearch"and her siblings  have the same parents.

The birth certificate has Kate Ortmayer ne Donohoe has the Mother.   Julius Ortmayer is definately his Father.

  • Scotlandspeople records Julius Ortmayer marrying Margaret Stevenson in Leith South in 1887. The 1891 census tells us they were still together then (living in Kentish Town Rd). Julius & Mgt both 27. He was born in Munich, and was a pork chef. Also there are their son Julius born Torquay, aged 3 and Mgts’s mother Jane Stevenson aged 56.

I can’t see the family at all in the 1901 census of Ireland, England or Scotland.

I looked for a death of Margaret Ortmayer.  I did not find one. I did find 3 children: Julius Raphael 1892 in London; Ernest Frederick 1889, London and Lena Bertha 1904, London. You might want to check them out to see who the informant was. Might have been their mother. (Ernest was born 1889 and Margaret in 1891).

So if Julius married your Kate, it required Margaret to have died between 1891 and 1895, and for a remarriage.  I don’t see either of those events in the civil indexes, and as I said previously, curiously Julius is describing himself as single in 1911, when working as a chef at the Abbotsford Hotel in Russell Square.

Kate evidently said she was married when she registered the birth, because otherwise the formerly would be deleted and she’d just be Kate Donohue. But the Registrar did not ask for proof of marriage in those times, so we can’t infer there definitely was a marriage.

Julius was still a German citizen in 1911, so no naturalisation file to look for, at that point anyway. Something that might have shed a little more light on things.

  • There is a Petty Sessions event in 1897 in Kerry, Ireland  for a Julius Ortmayer listed at Findmypast.ie, I thought this may be of interest to you.

  • Thanks for the further information, I have already found 4 ladies who claim to be Mrs Ortmayer but only a marriage certificate for M Stevenson.

Juluis was naturalised in 1912 and I assumed that he changed his name sometime during the war.
