Is there any information out there on the burial of EDWARD JACOB, d. 1901a widower, 106 years old (per centenarians listed in contemporary newspapers), sexton, St. John's Church of Ireland, Kilnamanagh, Wells. Employee of Robert Doyne. Does anyone have access to the parish records or to the graveyard of St. John's Church? Or know the name of Edward Jacob's wife or family members (he was not the contemporary Edward Jacob married to Ellen Dixon)? I have the name of one son (Robert, my gggrandfather).

  • On his death registration for Edward in 1901 his age was reported as 98 by Mary Murphy his servant/housekeeper (1901 census).

Do you have any additional details for his son Robert ?
e.g. place of birth, approx year of birth etc..

Historic Church of Ireland records for the parish of Kilnamanagh are held by the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin and cover baptisms from 1818, marriages from 1824 and burials from 1825. Copies also appear to be available on microfilm in the National Archives.  As far as I know records for the parish are not available anywhere online.

  • Many thanks for your reply, and, yes that is EJ's death certificate. I do have a lot of later information on his son Robert Jacob, born 1948, somewhere in Co Wexford (from census etc), father's name was Edward (Marriage certificate 1872: Templeshanbo, Wexford), etc. But I do not have anything on his early family history or his mother's name (and I can't get to Dublin!)

  • Unfortunately there are very few Church of Ireland records for Co. Wexford available online at the moment, (partial transcripts for just two parishes included on RootsIreland for example), so would be difficult searching for likely baptisms for Robert without knowing where, i.e. which parish or town, in the county he was born.

Historic baptism, marriage and burial records are available for Tembeshanbo parish so probably the best place to start. These include baptisms  going back to 1815, marriages to 1800, and burials to 1815. The records are held by the RCB Library in Co. Dublin and they have started to include some transcripts for the parish as part of the Anglican Record Project. The transcripts only cover marriages for the years 1800 to 1815 at present - I didn't spot any Jacob in the listing they have

Marriages generally took place in the bride's parish so it's possible that Templeshanbo was the parish of Robert's bride and he lived elsewhere.

What residence and occupation does Robert give for himself and his father on his marriage to Elizabeth Rothwell ? are any of the witnesses Jacobs ?

Also worth bearing in mind that not all Church of Ireland parishes have historic records available back to the 1840s.
