My oldest confirmed ancestor is James GERVIN, reportedly born in Coalisland 1810-16. He emigrated to Canada.

A DNA match listed a James Gervin born 12 Aug 1810 in Clonoe, son of David GERVIN and Sara DONNELLY.. No source was given for this information.

A search of GEDCOM data revealed a tree listing Hugh GERVIN born in 1812, also in Clonoe, son of “David GIRVAN & Sara DONLY.”

My working hypothesis is that James & Hugh were brothers.

Do these names appear on anyone's tree?

  • The RC records for Clonoe have marriages starting in 1806 and baptisms in 1810. There is a gap in the baptisms from 1816 to 1822. The records are on Ancestry.  I see a marriage between David Gervin & Sara Donly on 20th Nov 1809. Witnesses were John Donnelly & Margaret (surname illegible).

I see a baptism for James on 12th August 1810. Sponsors James Dunn & Ellen Girvan. David & Sarah’s townland was Shanliss. Also baptism for Rose 20.11.1822, sponsors were illegible Donnelly and Mary Donnelly. I didn't see a baptism for Hugh Girvin.

In the tithe applotment records for Shanliss in 1827 there were 8 Girvan farms including one headed by David.

By the time of Griffiths Valuation in 1860, David Girvin is listed in Shanlis Upper. He had plot 10 which was a farm and just under 8 acres. (That property today is on the modern B520 road a mile or two north of Coalisland. It’s still farmland. There is a house standing though whether it’s the original is difficult to say from Google Earth).

The GRONI website has a death for a David Girvan on 17.10.1864 aged 101, registered in Dungannon (Coalisland sub-district). So that might be him. Ages were just guessed in the 1800s and 101 might be out by quite  a few years. The death is not viewable on-line free yet but you can pay to view it for £2.50 (sterling). David’s name is deleted from the Valuation Revision records for Shanliss Upper at the same time so I’d be surprised if it wasn’t his death.

I notice there were Donnelly families living nearby in Shanliss Lower so that may be where Sarah originated.

  • My father James was born (1917) on Farm 16, Shanliss Upper, Griffiths Map.

Tenant in 1860 was James Girvan.(d Aug 1891). I think this is the James Girvan born to David and Sarah Donnelly (1810).

Joseph, his son, took over until his death in Jan 1903.

My grandmother (died Sept 1918) inherited this farm on the death of her mother Jane (Aug 1911).
