Seeking help tracing the parents, grandparents, and siblings of my gr-gr-grandmother, Catherine HINCHEY / HINCHY. I have the following info from the Limerick Ancestry & Archives, based on Limerick Diocese Office records:

David HINCHEY/HINCHEY and Margaret QUILTY had 4 daughters baptized at St. Michael’s RC Parish, Limerick City on these dates:
21.05 1823 – Catherine -- sponsor/godparent: Bridget Quilty
02.11.1825 --Bridget, sponsors/godparents: James Connell and Ellen Hurley
25.11.1828—Hanora, sponsors/ godparents: John McDonnell and Mary Kilfoy
20.09.1831 – Margaret, sponsors/godparents: Michael Hinchy and Bridget Conway.

I’m told that the parents must have been born, married, and died – and perhaps had more children - elsewhere because apparently these are the only records existing for this family in St. Michael’s.

Catherine Hinchey (age 20), my gr-gr-grandmother, left Cork, Ireland on the “Royal Saxon” in Mar 1844, arriving 29 Jun 1844 in Sydney, Australia (then called Port Jackson).  She travelled as an “Assisted Passenger” under the protection of Francis & Mary Donahoe/Donohoe (known to her for 2 years), as did two other women who may have been known to her: Mary Tracey (28) and Margaret Kennedy (20).

I do have considerable information about Catherine’s life after her arrival in Sydney that I would be willing to share with family members, but I clearly need help tracing her family in Ireland.  The only snippet of info I have about her family is that her sister, Margaret Hinchey, was a talented lacemaker – but so were a lot of young women in that era.

Any assistance with actual data or suggestions for further research would be very much appreciated.

    Hello again!

I checked Roots Ireland and did not see a David Hinchy/Hinchey marriage record anywhere in Ireland. I did find an 1801 baptismal record for a David Hinchy in St. Munchins parish in Limerick city. Not sure if this is your David or another David.

  • Hello Roger,  I'm writing with an apology for the delay in posting a response to your kind message above.  I actually wrote a reply almost a year ago when you posted your message, but apparently I didn't post it properly because it doesn't appear on the Message Board.

Thanks so much for taking the time to discover this David HINCHY and provide the details in the Birth record.  Given the 1801 date this certainly could be the "DAVID HINCHY" who was my 3x gr-grandfather.  He would have been 22 years old when the oldest of his 4 daughters was born in 1823 (at least they are the only siblings I know of for my gr-gr-grandmothe Catherine, so it's possible he's the right one.  Another clue that "sort of fits" is that their eldest daughter (my ancestor) was named "ELLEN CATHERINE" --and this David's mother was "ELENOR" so maybe that fits the naming pattern for Irish families of the day??  Actually, since the name "David HINCHEY/HINCHY seems more unusual (rare?) than many Irish names, I'm always excited to get any kind of a lead.

Also - I note that David HINCHY/HINCHEY's wife may have been MARY QUILTY - not MARGARET QUILTY  - or she could have had both names...   any chance you might see any QUILTY family members in either the MUCNHINS or St.MICHAEL's parish records?   Not sure where to look for death./burial records for this couple but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Again - my thanks for your earlier help.

Roots Ireland did not have any Mary Quilty baptismal records in St. Michael's and St. Munchins in the period around 1810. There was an 1805 record in St. Mary's as well as a record in Bruff RC parish and Fedamore RC parish. The St. Mary's record is below.

  • Thanks very much, Roger - I'll do some follow-up on the 3 parishes you have identified in hopes of finding somemore clues!    MY HINCHY/HINCHEY and QUILTY 3xggrandparents may have come from one of these parishes before winding up in St.Michael's in Limerick where their 4 (at least) daughters were baptized.
