Hi there. I am looking for information on my gg. grandfather, EDWARD JENNINGS. He was born in 1818 +/-1 in Ireland, then emigrated to the US, firstly to New York, where he enrolled at Columbia University and qualified as a (medical) doctor in 1843. He then moved to Halifax, Novia Scotia, where he practised as a doctor until his death in 1884. He married a widow, Mary Agatha Oakes, and after his death, she moved with the rest of her family to Scotland.

The only other piece of information I have is that he was (in Canada at least) a member of the Episcopalian church, so I suspect he came from a Protestant rather than a Catholic background.

I haven't been able to trace him or his family in Ireland, so any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks - Tim

  • Hi Tim

There is a record of the baptism of Edward Jennings on www.rootsireland.ie/ (pay per view site)

It is 1822 in Down; I went through the parishes and found that it was LOUGHINISLAND R C so perhaps he converted later (he's about the right vinatge to have done so)

The few years difference in the records could be accounted for by illiteracy, inaccurate transcriptions or a late baptism perhaps

  • Thank you Col. I will follow that one up. The 1818 date came from his records in the Canadian census, so don't know how accurate that would be.
