I am looking for information/family for Davis. I am unsure of where they were located. My great Grandmother born approx 1910 is Lillian Davis, her Father is Joseph Davis DOB unknown. Lillian's mother is Hattie Stinson DOB unknown. Lillian has a son named Harry J.D. Smith born 1929.

I am trying to create a family tree, unfortunately my searches have ended here. I know that Hattie and Joseph were from Ireland. That's as far as I've gotten. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Looks like the family appears on the Canadian 1911 census in Renfrew North, Ontario - parents names match, and Lillian's shown age 4, so born about 1907. See here ( Library and Archives Canada) The Davis family are last on the page.

  • Thank you! I am looking for more information on Joseph Davis, when and where he was born. Parents and so on. I found a wonderful page with some info. The info you gave me was correct. However the articles I located did not give me a DOB or DOD.

  • That Canadian census shows all the family and gives ages, and place of birth as Ireland for all. It's best to work back step by step so I would suggest starting the search with the children to try to locate where in Ireland they were born and then work back to their parents mariage etc...

p.s. am I reading the census details correctly - are those 'ditto' marks for the rest of the family after the place of birth for Joseph ?

  • I was reading that census incorrectly - according to the obituary on that page you linked Joseph came to Canada with his family when he was about 13, so c1888 and settled in 'Huntley', and later married 'Hattie Stinson of Ottawa', so all the children born in Canada. The article also mentions him opening a blacksmith shop as a young man in somewhere named 'Bells Corners'

Since we dont have an Irish location to search, I think the next step would be to search for Joseph in earlier Canadian census returns as these may show him with his parents, which might help narrow down the correct birth for him in Ireland.

  • I did some further searching. Joseph Davis' father is David Davis, and his Father is

    William Davis
    B:1805
    County Tyrone, N. Ireland
    D: 1870
    Country Tyrone, N. Ireland

  • Based on his age etc shown on the 1911 census, I think this extracted birth is definitely worth checking out - father's name is David, and the date of birth is shown as 1st Jan. one of the articles you linked mentioned that Joseph was a 'New Years Baby'...

    Name : Joseph Davis
    Birth Date : 01 Jan 1875
    Birthplace : Ireland
Parents Names : David Davis and Ann Patrick
    Reference IDv 2-1 p 385

    see : here

The full index details for the birth show the Registration District as Strabane, which covered part of counties Donegal and Tyrone. The references are Volume 2 / Page 385. The birth shows up on the GRONI/NIDirect system which has civil records for counties in Northern Ireland, and confirms the date, and district. You need credits to view the full details, such as place of birth father's occupation etc. You can also search for siblings and his parents marriage etc.

  • a few more detail for now -

also from extracted civil records(*) - a few siblings to Joseph here, which might help find the family in earlier Canadian records to confirm the link, and it looks like David Davis and Anne Patrick married on the 26th November 1863, in or near Ardstraw, Co. Tyrone - link (extracted civil marriage record, FamilySearch)

*note there are duplicates in the extracted records, and also some inaccurate captions relating to details not actually included on civil birth records - e.g. christening date, father's birthplace, etc, also keep in mind that the locations mentioned are often districts or sub districts rather than exact places (town, townland etc) of birth.

  • believe I've found the Davis family in 1891 in East Huntley, Lanark North Ontario. Even though the ages are a little off, the names of the parents and children (even middle names for two of them) are a good  match the sequence of the extracted births in Co. Tyrone - e.g. Margaret Ann, Sarah Jane and Joseph etc. Summary of the names and ages below :

1891 Census of Canada (page dated 14th April 1891)

    David Davis     50   (abt 1841)
    Ann Davis     50
    William Davis     21
    Robert Davis     19
    Mary Davis     17
    Joseph Davis     14
    Margaret Ann Davis     13
    Sarah Jane Davis     10
    Matilda Davis     8
    David George Davis     4

David snr shown as Farmer, as are some of the children, and Religion for the family shown as Presbyterian, and place of birth given as 'Ireland' for all, with definite 'ditto' marks on this one...

See this link  (Library and Archives Canada, the Davis household is the 3rd record on the resuilts page)
