  • Daniel:

Did Mary Anne emigrate before 1901? Do you know her parents names? Siblings?

  • Daniel:

I went to Ancestry.com  I located the index record for her 1910 marriage to Daniel Mullen. I also located the 1930 census record where Mary Anne, Daniel and their four children were living at 57th and Woodland in Southwest Philly.  That form indicated that Mary Anne and Daniel both came to America in 1906.

I did some further checking and found a Mary Anne O'Rourke coming to Philadelphia in 1906 on the ship Merion. This Mary Anne was born around 1888 and lived in Carrick on Shannon which is in Co. Leitrim and also partially in Co. Roscommon. Here is the 1901 census record for the family.

I always question dates of immigration on census forms so this may be a different Mary Anne.

You mentioned Ballyhaunis in your note. Is this based on oral hitory?

  • Ballyhaunis is based on oral history but I belive this to be my great grand parents because up until the late 1980's my grand mother thier daughter still lived in the house on 57th and Woodland.maybe we have a wrong date of birth for her it isnt unheard of. Thank you for your help. Is there any way to try and find her parents or possibly siblings?

  • Hi

    Noted your email.

Checked details you provided. After some consideration, I may lead you in a slightly different direction.

Firstly, I checked Civil records for the Ballyhaunis district and surrounding Union areas and was not convinced that a Mary Ann O'Rourke was born in the actual district of Ballyhaunis or immediate environs.  From records that I could access, I checked the Catholic parish records of the parishes linked primarily with Ballyhaunis. These parishes were Annagh, Bekan and Aghamore. No luck again.

However, I extended my research and found a record for the birth of a Mary Ann O'Rourke born to a Cornelius O'Rourke and Ann McNicolas in 1883 in the parish of Kiledan, Kiltimagh in a parish area only 15 miles from Ballyhaunis. This detail gives greater credibility to a possible Ballyhaunis connection somewhere in your family history although the O'Rourke name is not an East Mayo name. Is it possible that Cornelius O'Rourke was from another part of Ireland who followed the growing railway system of the West of Ireland where a growing Merchant class was setting up business?

I checked the records further and noted that this Mary Anne may be an only child or at least the only child born to these parents. Further research suggested that her parents were married in Kiltimagh in 1882!

I checked the 1901 census and could only find Mary Anne. She was living with her mother's parents in Kiltimagh.

You can attain further records from the website www.rootsireland.ie. If these records add more light to any part of your family history, I could assist further. Again, I would advise that you attain the birth and marriage record on website that I suggested. I may be able to assist further.

    Kind regards
