After years of trying to trace my father's grandfather from Australia, it's led me to the Niland's in Killeenaran. Michael Niland and Mary Burns had a son John Niland, most likely born 1858 in Killeenarran, who then left to live in Essex London to work on the Docks and marry Mary Hermitage. John's eldest son, James Patrick Niland is my great grandafther.

In tracing Niland family DNA and in trying to make connections with this branch, I have found DNA matches to the Timmins, Redmonds & Fawles, and therefore I believe Fahy.

I have been gifted some of your hand written notes on the family tree getting back to Thomas Niland and Sabrina Burke but unfortunately I cannot seem to connect the two families.

I am currently working with the theory that Michael's parents were Michael Niland & Honor Burke in and around Tuam, so I wonder if the Niland connection is the red herring and the connection is on the Burke side?

If you have any insights to the family connection, I'd love to hear from you.

Kind Regards, Kristy

  • Dear Kristy,

I am interested in your message. Just wondering did you get my hand-written family tree from Billy Timmins. If you didn't I would recommend that you contact him at  billytimminswicklow@gamail.com. His mother was born in Rahaneena, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway but the place is popularly known as  The Weir.

My mother was Katie Niland (1903-1998) from Chessy, Ardrahan, Co. Galway. Her great-grandfather Patsy Niland came to Chessy from The Weir c. 1824.

Billy Timmins's family would have closer links to The Weir  than my family have. He research on the Nilands is far more extensive than mine. You can mention to him that we were in contact.

Let me know again  when you contact Billy.

I wish you the best of luck in your research,

    de Lourdes Fahy.

  • Dear Sister de Lourdes Fahy,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I had actually received the family tree from Michael Timmins, but I have previously been in contact with Billy & his wife regarding the possible Niland connection, given that his mother and he are both DNA matches.

I shall reach out again and see if we can delve into the connection more.

Thanks you again for your help.

    Kind Regards, Kristy
