My ancestor John Reddin/Redden/Redding/Reading was born in 1821 in Lorrha, Tipperary and joined the 97th Regiment in 1839.  He eventually settled in Australia in the 1850s.

I am struggling with handwriting of the time but John appears to have had three brothers Patrick, William and Thomas.  His father's name started with D but oddly it doesn't look like Daniel - looks like Daffy or Darky to me, perhaps a nickname or was that a name?  His mother looks like Bess or something similar.  But no children had these names, his eldest children were Ellen and Thomas.

I'd love to know any more about this family and would welcome any details, contacts or pointers to record sources.  The Reddins were Roman Catholic, John could read a little bit.  He was a law-abiding man but his record is a little checkered by a misdemeanor about every fifteen years, a judge stated that John had difficulty resisting temptation.

  • Hi Irene

The only birth/baptism record of John Redden (or similar names) on www.rootsireland.ie/ is 1829 in Tipperary but the parish is not Lorrha or Dorrha

The record which will cost MAY have his parents' names on it.

I searched for Patrick William & Thomas and there are lots of records for all of them 1821 + - 20 years.

3 of the 5 Thomas records are from Lorrha RC parish

1 of the 2 William records is from Lorrha RC parish

3 of the 4 Patrick records are from Lorrha RC parish

I assume you are aware of John's court appearances from findmypastireland (also charges) as there are several rferences to them there.

  • Hi Col,

Thank you for replying.  No, I was not aware of his Irish court appearances :).  I have a world subscription to findmypast so I'll go search.  I was aware of his court martial for desertion, subsequent transportation and a court appearance in Australia a bit later.  He managed to receive the lightest sentence for everything and had each sentence cut radically short.

I don't have a subscription to rootsireland but I'll go check out the options.

I'm quite impressed by his facility for getting into the records.  He is proving a very satisfying target for research.  Yet he was a complete brick wall for the last 25 years!

  • Hi

My name is Maggie Heffernan and I think that a daughter of John Reddan , Mary Ann Josephine Reddon married a William Herrick. William was a brother to my great grandfather Francis Herrick.

The Herrick emigrated to Victoria in 1851 from the parish of Lorrha/Dorrha.

Would be interested in exchanging family knowledge.

  • John Reddan is my 3rd great grandfather and i believe it's the same John.

On my family tree i have him down as 'John Reddan 1821 – 1905 BORN IN IRELAND, DIED IN TULLA. & Married to a WINIFRED CLEARY (b.1833-d.1907)' But have no further information on his parents, just everything leading up to him.

I am unsure of all their children as i had just been focusing on my direct line, but Thomas John Reddan was a child of his born in ireland in 1860... my 2nd great grandfather. I had added in an Anne Reddon as i came across it on a record which i think may be this Mary Ann Josephine Reddon mentioned in previous replies on this post.

If anyone has information could they please message me?

    Thankyou.

  • Hello:

I noticed that there was a mention of a Reddan from Tulla County Clare.  There are several members who are researching this family.  If any one of you is interested to find more, please let me know at this thread.  As to the question of the first name beginning with a “D”, it may have been Darby.  This was a nickname for Jeremiah.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
