Hello from Australia,

My 2x great grandparents Robert Young (b c1832) and Margaret Irwin/aka Irvin (b c1843) were married 28th October 1862 in the Meeting House, Upper Clonaneese, Parish of Killeeshil, (Presbyterian Church).

According to their Marriage Certificate, Robert was a labourer residing in Escengle, father was William Young, farmer. Margaret was from Tullyvannon, father was William Irwin, farmer. Both signed with an X for their names.

Witnesses to the marriage were James Hutton and Anne Beatty.

I have found Tullyvannon on maps, but not "Escengle", Roberts residence. Can anyone tell me where and what Escengle was... a property name? Perhaps it is now known by another name?

The 1901 Census shows Robert and Margaret at House 18, Cabragh, with their two youngest children, Cassie (spelling as Casey in the census) aged 19, and Charles aged 17. Religion for all given as Church of Ireland. All shown as born in Co Tyrone.

By 1911 Census, Margaret is deceased and Robert is with his daughter and son-in-law Cassie and William James Burrows, and their son, at House 6 in Cabragh.

Margaret died at Cabragh in 1902, and Robert died in 1917 at Cabragh, at the residence of his daughter Catherine/Cassie Burrows.

Known children of Robert and Margaret Young are:

John b. 1865 Clonavaddy (married Margaret White)

Thomas b. 1867 Clonavaddy (married Mary Ann Colbert 1889 in Killeeshil Church of Ireland)
Thomas and Mary Ann are my great grandparents - both died Paisley, Scotland. Mary Ann is a daughter of William Colbert and Margaret Strutt of Killeeshil/Caledon.

Eliza Jane b. 1869 Clonavaddy (married William Leaney)

William b. 1871 Clonavaddy

Maria b. 1873 Clonavaddy

Margaret b. 1877 Killeeshil (married William Kerr)

Catherine b. 1879 Killeeshil (married William Burrows)

Charles b. 1882 (I think Charles may have emigrated to Canada as a young man ?)

I would love to make contact with others if any of these names/families seem connected.

While researching my Young ancestors I have come across another "Young" family from Bockets, Killeeshil, at a similar time and with same/similar names and I've had to careful that I don't confuse the two families. They may however be related in some way that I don't yet know of.

I understand that many of the old records were destroyed in 1922, however I would like to try and trace Robert Young and Margaret Irwin's families back further if possible. Any advice is appreciated.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Kind Regards,

  • I wonder if the townland where Robert Young came from might be Eskragh? There were Youngs farming there in the 1830s:

Have you looked at the original or does your information come from a transcript on one of the pay to view sites? Sometimes those transcriptions aren’t all that accurate.

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church, so Clonaleese Upper is probably the Irwin family church. However their records only start in 1868 for baptism and 1860 for marriages. Perhaps the church only opened around that time? I suspect therefore that prior to that the family attended another Presbyterian church in the area. Possibly Clonaleese Lower. It has baptisms from 1811 and marriages from 1845. Copy of their records is held in PRONI in Belfast. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net

  • Thank You Elwyn for your reply.

I have a certified copy of the original marriage certificate, and after staring at the residence of Robert Young, for some time, and comparing letters in the handwriting, it could possibly be Eskragh, however it definitely looks to start with Esc...and what I saw at the end as "gle" could be a "gh" ? Will see what I can find on the Young name in Escragh/Eskragh for any connection.

I will look further into the records of the Lower Clonaneese Church too, and contact the Killeeshil and Clonnanese Historical Society to see what they may have on my Young/Irwin ancestors in that area.

    Thanks again,

    Kind Regards
