Seeking the parents of my ancestor Richard Nagle.  He was born around 1744, emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland about 1761.  Middle initial may have been "C".  Indicates that he came from Cork, Ireland.  Not clear if city or county was meant.  One rumor has it that Edmund Burke paid the way for his passage to America.

  • Dear Deward

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I had a look on rootsireland.ie but there are no records for a Richard Nagle for the time period you refer to.  You could have a look at irishgenealogy.ie but as the time period for your search is very early you may not find anything. Do you know what religion Richard was?

There are various bits and pieces on ancestry.com that I am sure you are aware of in messages on that site. As an aisde, have you seen this?

  • Yes I am familiar with that newspaper article about the Nagle family name.

Best as I can tell Richard Nagle (b.1744) was Catholic.  At least one source suggested that his trip to America was funded, in part, by Edmund Burke.  He may have been a close relative (nephew) of Edmund's mother, Mary Nagle, He resided in America on his arrival with a relative named McGuire, before he joined George Washington's army.  One source suggested his middle initial may have been "C".

  • Thanks for that. As I suggest, have a look on irishgenealogy.ie but keep in mind the early period of your search may hamper progress. Let me know if you find anything new. (Records for the RC parish of Annakissy don't begin until 1806).

    Best wishes
