We are very much looking forward to our visit to Ireland the last part of May.  We're hoping to be able to spend a couple of days in County Cavan making connections with my ancestoral family:  Henry Spinks and Jane Brennon, who were married in the Drung parish church in 1814.  Their daughter, Cecelia, was baptized there in 1815.

We really need and would welcome advice.

Would it be more practical to approach our visit from Dublin or Belfast?  We will be starting our tour in Dublin and ending up in Belfast.  We would like to visit the church and graveyard in Drung, plus try to locate some of the small holdings the Spinks and the Brennons were farming at the time of the Valuations.  Henry and Jane Spinks emigrated to Ontario, Canada between 1815 and 1819, but I would love to try and find a connection to Henry Spinks' family in Cavan.  I know Jane Brennon's parents were Francis & Margaret Brennon.  They were enumerated in the townland of Lisclone on the 1821 census.  The Spinks families seem to have lived in the southern part of the county.

We look forward to hearing from you.  Any suggestions, assistance or guidance would be so gratefully welcomed.

Thank you.

  • Jane and John:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you clarify the religious denomination for your family?

I looked at the 1821 census for Lisclone and did not see Brennans. There were Brennans in Drumgallen townland in Drung parish. Can you clarify?

We only have a few parish liaisons in Co. Cavan. Let me see if I can find a contact.

By the way, I would suggest visiting Cavan after Dublin and then head to Belfast.

  • Roger,

Thank you for your prompt reply.  First, I made an incorrect reference.  My mention of Lisclone came from the 1814 "Abstract of the rising generation or the Number of Pertinent Souls existing in the state of Childhood and unmarried in the Parishes of Drung and Larah in the Year 1814" found on the mircrofilm I borrowed with the Drung parish transcriptions on it.  This lists Francis Brennon and his children in Lisclone.  Although Francis Brennon died in 1817, parts of the family were in Drumgallen in 1821.  My apologies.

To clarify my mention of Dublin and Belfast.  We are committed to a two week group tour which commences in Dublin and ends in Belfast two weeks later.

Thank you again for your prompt reply.  I look forward to hearing from you again.  If you can't locate a parish liason in Co. Cavan, we'll just try the best we are able on our own.  We're luckier than most because we have two church references to start with and at least can visit the Drung church.

  • Hi Jane

Can you let me know the exact dates (or as close as you can) for your Cavan trip?
