Hello.  I am searching for information on my great-great grandfather's family.  His name is Morgan Henry Morris, born 3 July 1852 (although 1854 is also found in documents), in co. Galway (I believe in Rathfee, Lackagh Parish, Turloughmore); Morgan left Ireland circa 1870 following other family members (Thomas, John) to Ivesdale, Champaign, Illinois, USA. A cousin of Morgan's, Honora Morris, married Patrick Monaghan (who was from Monivea) in Ireland and left for Ivesdale during the mid-1800s.

The family Bible indicates that Morgan's parents were Michael Morris & Mary Shaughnessy. However, I cannot find any information about Michael & Mary and their extended relations.  Any information will be much appreciated.

  • I can see baptisms for three children to Michael Morris & Mary Shaughnessy, first two Michael & William in Lackagh Catholic parish in 1843 and 1850 with a residence given as Rathfee (townland), and the third Eleanor in Athenry RC parish in 1858 with resiedence as 'Tysaxon ', so appears the family moved sometime between 1850 and 1858. Athenry parish is adjacent to Lackagh and to the south east.

There could be missing pages, faded sections in the registers,  which might explain the difficulty locating a possible baptism for Morgan. It's also possible that his baptism was never noted in the register of the parish they lived at the time.

  • found one earlier baptism which I think is the same couple - Patk. Morris, parents Mich. & Mary, baptised on the 14th March 1846. Mary's surname is given as Morris, which I think is a mistake, but residence is shown a 'Rafy' which is probably a phonetic version of Rathfee.

see : Lackagh, Parish, 1846 (last entry - left page)

  • I too am Morgan Henry Morris' great great grandchild.  I have been able to trace my link back to him but do not possess familial information regarding any of his siblings or parents.  I too have found a birth date of 1952 and 1954 noted.  His obit (Illinois) states he was from Galway. He married Mary Ellen Slevin who was born in the US but her parents (John & Bridgette Muldoon)were from Ireland (unknown counties).  The Morgan family was most definitely Catholic as his son was a Reverand and two of his daughters were Nuns.

His children were all born in the U.S.  Rev. Morgan Henry Jr., John Patrick, Mary Mayme, Anna Cecilia, Nora Irene, Patrick Sarsfield, Michael Angelo (my great grandfather), Sadie Regina, Catherine (Sr. Celeste), Loretta Mary (Sr. Evangel), and Bridgette Agnes (this child/name is based on research by others).

As I don't have any info regarding Morgan's immediate family members, I am relying on the family names provided by mcfini.  Since your communications noted back in June 2016, has any other information regarding Morgan's family come to light?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
