I'm helping my brother-in-law trace his ancestry.  His 3rd great-grandmother Catherine Buckley, along with her mother Ellen and older sister Nellie) emigrated to California, U.S. sometime between 1844-1864.  Not sure if her father William died in Ireland before emigration or died in California.  Her sister Ellen's California death certificate said that her mother's maiden name was Ellen Goulden and that she was born in Macroom (Cork).  Using this information I was able to search NLI online parish registers, and found the baptismal record of Nellie Buckley (AKA Ellen) dated 29 June 1827 in Clondrohid parish, but not the record of her mother Ellen Goulden..

I have been unable to find the marriage record of her parents William Buckley to Ellen Goulden (married sometime before 1827).  I have checked:  Macroom, and surround parishes of Clondrohid, Aglish/Ovens, Annakissy/Monanimy, Blarney/Whitechurch, Donaghmore, Enniskeane, Inniscarra, Iveleary, Kilmichael, Kilmurry Kilnamartyra, Mallow, and Ovens.  Some other surrounding parishes didn't seem to have marriage records available for the timeframe I'm looking at.

This is what I have been able to learn about the family so far from parish records:

William Buckley (?-?) married before 1827 to Ellen Goulden (born abt 1803 in Macroom, Cork  -  died March 1875 inn Santa Cruz, California)

  1. Ellen Buckley (baptized 29 June 1827 in Clondrohid (Cork)
  2. Denis Buckley (baptized 10 August 1835 in Clondrohid (Cork)
  3. John Buckley (born & baptized 16June 1838 in Kenmare (Kerry)
  4. Mary Buckley (born & baptized 21 March 1841 in Kenmare (Kerry)
  5. Catherine Buckley (baptized 14 March 1844 in Kenmare (Kerry)

There is a big gap between the births of the first 2 children which I've been unable to fill.  I'm not sure where they moved to or were living between 1827-1835.  Sponsors for the children born in Clondrohid were:  Margaret Kelleher and Darby Quill in 1827, and Francis Goggin and Mary Twomey in 1835.  Sponsors for the children born in Kenmare were:  John Buckly (1838), Honora Hegarthy (1838), John Hegarty (1841), Helen Hegarty (1844), Elizabeth Marinane (spelling?) (1841), and Patrick Reilly (1844).

I would welcome any suggestions or information for:

  1. finding the marriage date and place of William Buckley and Ellen Goulden and the dates and places of birth for both of them.
  2. determining if William Buckley died prior to their emigration to California, U.S.
  3. determining date of emigration
  4. finding the family in Griffith's Valuation in County Kerry.

Many thanks and kind regards,

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You certainly have done a lot of good research on the Buckley/Goulden family.

I was unable to find the baptismal record for Ellen or the marriage record. Likely as you speculated, they were married in a parish that no longer has records back to the 1820s. Possibly they were married in Clondrohid prior to April 1822 when marriage records start.

I did locate an 1827 Tithe record in Macroom parish for a William Buckly. Not sure if this is the same William Buckley. The 1844 baptismal record for Catherine shows a place name of Clady which is not on the official townland list but likely was a local place name at that time. Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Prior to that time a few RC parishes have death info but Kenmare does not have records on their register. My assumption is that William died between 1844 and 1852 when the Griffiths was conducted in Kerry. The Griffiths head of household listing for Kenmare has three Buckley records but no William or Ellen. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kerry/kenmare.htm  Likely emigration occurred before 1852 but records in Ireland would not exist.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you for your response, Roger. What port would someone emigrating from Kenmare to the US have likely sailed from?

  • Leann,

I'm not sure if I'm related to your brother-in-law, but any time I see a Buckley surname in Kerry, I think it's worth mentioning. Additionally, I have a death certificate and online records that mention Kenmare.

My GGrandfather Denis Buckley arrived in San Francisco around 1879 with his brother Michael. Denis' death cert gives his birth as Kerry, father's name as Denis and his mother Honora Casey.

Denis married Honora Casey,  27 Feb 1838 in Kenmare. (address given as Kilpatrick. ) They had 10 children between 1841 and 1862: Murtagh, Mary, Thadeus, Cornelius, Timothy, Johanna, Denis, Michael, John and Patrick.

The elder Denis' death cert shows he was born 1812, died in 1885 in Droumaclorig, Kilgarvan, Kenmare, Kerry. I didn't find any mention of William in any of the children's baptism records, but your William is of the right age to be perhaps a brother or nephew to my Denis. It's somewhat of a longshot, but I can't miss an opportunity!

I live in California, very near San Francisco--can I be of any local help? I'm close enough to Santa Cruz for a fun day trip, and if you can narrow it down just a bit, I wouldn't mind looking for William's grave marker.

  • Denise,

Thank you for contacting me and sharing your Buckley family information.  I found an Alameda County marriage record for William and Ellen's daughter, Catherine Buckley,  She married Jose Roberto Joaquin MAJORS on 24 December 1865 at Mission San Jose, Alameda County, California.  The record says Catherine's mother Mrs. Ellen Buckley consented to the marriage, her father [William] being dead.  MAJORS was from Santa Cruz, and that is where they set up residence.  Catherine's older sister Ellen/Nellie had married Henry P. RICE the previous year in Santa Cruz.

So, if William was alive when they emigrated to California, he most likely died in Alameda County..
