Researching my Great-Great Grandfather Edmund Carroll (1800) and his wife Christine Quinlan (1790). They came to the United States in 1849 with children: Patrick (1820), John (1833), Mary (1835), Michael (1835) and James (1837). I know that Patrick was born in Limericck in 1820 - parish is unknown.

I assume they left for America during the potato famine but I don't know anything about his family in Limerick. Were there any other children left behind? I have been told that John's father was Anthony Carroll from Tipperary but have no verification of that fact.  Looking for any information.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

It may be difficult to learn more as the period of your search is fairly early and some parishes will not have surviving records from that period.

Have you already searched rootsireland or familysearch for any record of the family?

    Best wishes

  • I have researched locally for 30+ years. Recently, joined Ancestry.com but have had little luck in Ireland. I have just recently ventured into rootesireland and family search with limited success. Most of my ancestors hail from Ireland which makes it more frustrating.

  • Since my last posting, I have found a few records related to the Carroll Family but still am having difficulty in finding elusive birth records. What I have found is the following:

The 22 February 1824 marriage record for Edmund Carroll and Catherine Quinlan at Hospital, Limerick Ireland, Diocese: Cashel and Emly. The record states that his residence was in Effin.

1829 Tithe Applotment Book record indicating - County: Limerick, Parish: Eflin; and Townland: Brickfield

Ship manifest of the Cato. It sailed from Liverpool and arrived in New Orleans, LA on June 25, 1849. On the Ship was Edmund Carroll (45 years), Christine Catherine Carroll (40 years) and children: Patrick (18 years), John (17 years), Micheal (13 years), Mary (8years), and James (7 years).

Looking for any records or information on their birth, baptism, and parents. They were Catholic and likely fled during the potatoe famine.
