I am looking for Irish records/information pertaining to this family -

Parents:  John & Rose Treanor   Known Children:  Ellen, Owen

This was an advertisment which ran in the US papers December 1877.

ELLEN TREANOR, sister of Owen Treanor and daughter of John and Rose Treanor, from the parish of Jenkinstown, County Louth, Ireland. If any of her relatives or friends in Worcester, Mass., or elsewhere, would send information of her whereabouts, if still living, or of her death, to the undersigned, they would confer a favor by thus enabling him to carry out the wish of her deceased brother, Owen Treanor.  Address Rev. P. McKeever, O. S. B., St. Malachy’s Priory, Creston, Union county, Iowa.

I do not know what happened to Ellen. I have found Owen's death record (below).

Name: Owen Treanor

Death Date:     1 Feb 1877

Page #:            330

Birth Date:      1816

Cemetery:       CalvaryTown: Corning, Jasper, Iowa

Comment:       son of: John; son of: Rose

Thanks!

Ellen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Jenkinstown is in the civil parish of Ballymascanlan. The RC parish is Lordship and the records for the parish start in 1838 so baptismal records for Owen and Ellen are not available.   http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0191  The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for the parish shows many Traynor records including three Owen Traynor records including one in Jenkinstown.  http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/louth/ballymascanlan.htm

The 1901 census for Jenkinstown http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Louth/Jenkinstown/Jenkinst…   shows seven Trainor/Treanor families. Not sure how they connect to you family.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Thank you, Roger, for sending all of these links.  If naming patterns hold true then possibly some of these people are related to the family I search.  James born 1821 would be a possible contemporary of Ellen & Owen.

Are there any churches / cemeteries that I can contact?

I have done autosomal testing (with all 3 major companies).  The problem is DNA testing doesn't get down to that granular level (yet).  This past week, there was an excellent article posted explaining all those 'matches' come from existing trees. The only true accuracy is continent, not country. And the largest company, Ancestry, has close to 2,000,000 people who have been tested.  Most don't post their tree online. And while 2MM might sound like a lot they are of no value if they aren't the person to whom you're connected. There are many false positive matches also. I can find matches and the only ones I can positively identify as my 'cousin' I already knew.  I've corresponded to many but without the old-fashioned research we can't figure out that connecting relative if we don't already have that person in both of our trees.  Frustrating but fun.  One day....

Thank you again for your help.

I agree-- frustrating but fun. I have been able to break down a couple brick walls.
