    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Archerstown is in Donaghmore civil parish.

Were your Bruton ancestors RC or C of I?

  • Hi Vis kid

there is an Acherstown near Ashbourne in Meath close to the county boundry with Dublin. There are a number of Bruton families in Meath but not a huge amount, one was a former Taoisach or Prime Minister, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bruton and he has a brother a Minister in the current government.

I see a Lawrence Bruton married Elizabeth Gafney in 1790 in Meath the witnesses were Andrew Coffey and Bridget Gafney and they had a child in 1801 called Jane, his name appears a number of times in the search on a well know subscription site and he is a witness to the marriage of a James Hanlon not Hanley which is also a valid name and a Mary Gafney who I assume is his wifes sister.

There are a number of mentions of a Lawrence Bruton and when you mention 1830s was he born, married or died then.

There are only a total of 44 Brutons in the 1901 census so this is approximately about 10 families and they appear to be Roman Catholics.

Any more info, you can search Bruton locations here http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp and circa 1850s here http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ and the census here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ Only the 1901 and 1911 are complete.

I am located about 17 miles from Ashbourne.

  • TY Pat, yes supposedly Laurence was born around 1830, according to his Civil War records when he came to the US, also, yes, I have been in touch with PM John Bruton, there is a connection there we think maybe distant cousins, as all of us probably are.  TY for your prompt reply, I will check out those links you sent me.  His brother was Michael and married a Margaret Killarney, if we can find out who Michael's parents were, Michael being his brother, I want to investigate this through either Michael or Laurence, I might have more luck with Michael, since he did marry while still living in Ireland, Laurence left in 1854 or so and came to NY and PA.....

  • Hi Again

there is a Lawrence Bruton born 1837 in the Kilclonn parish, father Michael and mother Maria Flemming, sponsors Mick Flemming and Mary Bruton. Kilcloon appears to be west of Dunboyne and south west of Ashbourne, quiet a distance say 20 miles or so.

Roger was probably going to direct you to the recent Catholic registers put online, I attach the link but they can be a difficult lead but you can try the parish Roger found. Link to parish here http://www.ashbourneparish.ie/news/ and the registers here

    http://registers.nli.ie/

The fact that you knew of Archerstown indicates that is the right place so the birth above may not be correct.

I found no Brutons in any of the sites at that address so maybe they were not there too long.

  • Hi Vis Kid

while searching I noticed the baptism records for Kilcloon only start in 1836 and only James turns up as son of Margaret Killarney, there would be no records for Lawrence and Michael if that is the case. I found a James Bruton got married in south Dublin in 1859 but no way of knowing if he is your man, also a court appearance for a James for letting horses wander on the Dublin Road, address is Portane, Meath which I think I say as Portan somewhere else. However nothing is simple as there is a Portrane also in Dublin.

Civil death records commenced in 1864 and if you could locate the certificates for the mother and father you could see who identified the person and the relationship is usually given.

Still the mystery of Archerstown and Kilcloon but the mothers name is so unusual that it must be correct.

Any thing else you can locate, if you get the dates after 1864 revert and I will give you the link to get the certificates, short version €4.

    Good Luck

  • (Brutons in NY and Michigan, USA)

Hi!  We had Catholic Brutons from Dunshaughlin who emigrated to America in 1849, settling in Monroe County near Rochester, NY.  "Michael" seemed repeated throughout the various families. My gggfather was John Bruton, born 1791, with sons Michael, Robert (b. 1823), and daughter Julia of Judith, who later married a Sherlock.  All but Julia/Judith came to Rochester area, where there was already another Michael.     John's son Robert moved to Bowne, Michigan ( right outside Grand Rapids) ...was in Civil War and died. His cousin Robert, who was *maybe* Michael's son, was also in Civil War, but settled in Illinois.     Now then....confusing, but there was a Patrick in Bowne who may have been Michael's son....the "another Michael" back in Rochester. That Michael eventually moved to Michigan.    We have never been able to determine if these several families and are cousins, but do believe so.  It just makes sense. It's mostly on my "Caroline Bjorkander Family Tree" at Ancestry.com, if interested.   John Bruton's sister, Ann Bruton Lynch, and her husband William,  also moved to Monroe County area.

Would love to find some relatives in Meath,  but in checking the church records, I have not been able to make any definite connections, at least from here ...maybe  by connecting with people there, we could. Hoping you'll see something in this message that may help. Also, FYI,  many Brutons are buried in this graveyard, including my ggg-grandfather, John.       Would love to see the "big picture."   John's wife, by the way was a Mary McCabe, and she must've died before John came to America. But a James McCabe came at the same time… Don't know if that's her brother .
