As a youngster in the 80s, I had the good sense to write to my late paternal grandmother’s younger sister and asked her to share her knowledge of the family history.  They were Scots whose ancestors had emigrated from Ireland. I am now commencing my searches to learn more about these people.

Grand Aunt Betty seemed to think her people were from County Leitrim but her maternal grandfather, Patrick Savage, was apparently actually born in Sligo about 1860 so I thought I should post here in case the family lore turns out to be mistaken (as it often happens) and this family actually instead has roots in Sligo.

Patrick’s parents were John Savage and Helen Oates who appear to have died sometime before 1903.

Patrick married Mary Duffy in Dunbarton County, Scotland in 1881. She was born in Ireland somewhere about 1861.  Her parents were John Duffy and Mary Murphy who also appeared to have died before 1903.

Patrick and Mary both died in Scotland, respectively in 1936 and 1928

I would be pleased to correspond with any fellow researchers/distant cousins out there.

I think your ancestors were from Co. Sligo rather than Co. Leitrim. The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Leitrim does not list any Savage entries. There are 11 Savage entries in the 1858 Griffiths for Co. Sligo including a John Savage in Doongelagh townland in Kilmacallan civil parish.

I checked Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  and there is an 1856 baptismal record for a Patrick Savage, father John and mother Eleanor in the Riverstown RC parish records. Riverstown is the RC parish for Kilmacallan civil parish which relates to the Griffiths record.

There are also 2 Savage families in the 1901 census for Doongelagh townland. There were no Savages in Leitrim in the 1901 census.
