Hi all, I'm looking for my husband's family from Cartern outside Ballymote. I've checked census and have family traced back to Martin Scanlon (Gg grandad) and Bridget Cawley (b 1826 Gg grandmother), married 1843. I've got baptism results and marriage results from Roots Ireland but cannot get any further back. The other side is Thomas Scanlon (b 1842 Gg grandad) and Bridget McHugh (b 1845 Gg grandmother) m 1862 in Emlaghfad and Kilmorgan. They come from Upper Carrigans. Bridget Scanlon and Patrick Scanlon marry in Bunninadden in 1899, then emigrate to Scotland. If anyone has any information on these two scanlon families, I'd be ever so appreciative. The Cartern Scanlons had a son (great uncle) who was a national teacher there, his name was Barthomlew and he married another teacher Anne in 1908.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the 1833 Tithe listings for Emlaghfad parish and there were a number of Scanlon records. Some were shown in a townland which could be Carrigans. See link below.

The RC reocrds for Emlaghfad parish start in 1856 for baptismal reocrds and 1824 for marriages see link below. Likely you will not be able to go back much further than 1843.

You may not be aware that earlier this week, the Irish government released the images for civil birth, marriage and death records including the images for most records. Some of the older ones still have to be added. These records are free and you can find them at www.irishgenealogy.ie

  • I wasn't aware of that release, it's been some time since I visited the sites. Thank you so much!!! I hadn't yet ordered any copies, and had only seen indexes of the bmd. I will check all of these out, I really appreciate your reply. I did a lot of research awhile back, and we even visited Cartern and saw one of the ruins of one of the properties in the 1901/11 census. I haven't been able to figure out how to match the address on the census to maps or current maps, so can only guess that the ruins we saw were the right house. There were a few in the immediate area, some up private drives, so we were tentative in our explorations. We've been told be an expat sligo man that when the locals see a hire car or a UK reg car poking around back lanes that they pull the curtains and hide. I guess they get alot of folk looking to find their ancestors and are fed up. It's a shame, because we did see a farmer pass on a tractor, and he smiled and waved as we were looking around the ruin. I would have loved to knock on the door of the current farmhouse next door and asked about the past, but was too wary of being a nuisance. Do you have any idea how to link with the folk still living in the immediate environs, short of knocking on their doors? Thank you again! :)

The house numbers on census returns were not addresses. The RIC constables were responsible for picking up the census returns from families and make sure they were filled out correctly. When they went into a townland like Cartern, the first house visited was house 1, the next house 2 etc. So in 1901, you might have been house 2 but in 1911, house 4 depending on how the constable came through the townland.

Regarding you question about contacting locals, on my initial trips I was reluctant to knock on doors but in more recent trips I have been checking with locals. It is the only way to find out information.

  • (Lori,

I know that I'm years late but Ive just found youre enquiry about the Scanlons of Cartron, Brigid Scanlon was a great grand aunt of mine (My great grandmother was Katherine Cawley)

Bartholemw Ssanlon was a teacher in Carrowreagh school (long closed) until sometimes in the nineteen thirties, My mother taught alongside him as a very young teacher circa 1920.

I think that the old scanlon house is still standing rebuilt and reconstructed many times. It is now occupied by Paric Mc Donagh.

  • Hi, I have some info about the CAWLEY family....

This info is not specific to your Sligo family but may be of help.

Some of the CAWLEYs lived over in Mayo, Crossmolina area. Charles CAWLEY (1838-1922) + Mary FLANNERY (1851-1896) did have a dau Bridget CAWLEY (1868-1898). 1868 is an estimate, her siblings b 1869-1878, so her date might be later. I do not have proof of her birth, but web: Ireland, Calendar of Wills hives death at 7 Feb 1898. This may be a close relative, as there was lots of back & forth Mayo-Sligo.

I also have some John CAWLEYs b est 1790 and est 1820, family trees say "Co Mayo or Sligo". John 1790 m Margaret GETHIN and his son Michael emigrated to Rochelle, Ogle, IL, USA. John 1820 m Ann TOGHER (1835-) and apparently moved west to Belmullet where dau Ann CAWLEY (1866-1897) was b.

Hugh CAWLEY b est 1802 m Ann MUNNELLY (1810-) which is how I connect to CAWLEY. My 2nd cousin has dna matches to CAWLEY, perhaps via MUNNELLY (our g'g'grandmother Catherine MUNNELLY b 1808 Mayo. John CAWLEY b sligo in 1861 lived in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England..

I am told that some of the CAWLEYs were formerly COOLICAN in Mayo & Sligo.

John CAWLEY b abt 1844 m Mary Kate MCGARRY (1845-1897) and d Scranton, Lackawanna, PA in 1915.

This is a link to JOhn CAWLEY 1820 in my tree. When you get there use Tree Search for "List of all people" then enter last name. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/7359193/person/390074522623/facts  Also try SCANLON, I have lots and you may be able to see some patterns. My Mayo family em. to IL with siblings to PA. Happy Hunting!
