I am searching for more details of my 4th great grandfather, William Johnston (see link to William's profile on wikitree), born ca. 1791 at County Sligo, Ireland and died ca. 1863 at Cedar Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, USA. What I know comes from a historical text written about his son, William, Jr. in Iowa, USA. I suspect this could be his burial place.

He adopted the ministry as a profession, becoming a noted clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church. I have contacted both the Methodist centre in Northern Ireland and the USA but neither of them had heard of him.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only record that shows up is for a William Johnson baptised on 18 November 1794 in the parish of Emlefad & Kilmorgan County Sligo, parents William Johnson mother Jane Johnson, not sure if you can claim this William to be yours.

Any idea when he emigrated ?

  •  Martin Johnston born 1808 in Sligo Ireland is my great great grandfather.  I'm wondering if William would have his father?  Martin is as far back as we have researched.

  • Sorry, I just now got the notification of some responses...

Since my first posting, have decided to use the burial at Wilton, Iowa as him. That hasn't helped coming up with more details, however.

@Vicky, I don't show William as having a son named Martin but it could have been possible. I have contacted the Sligo Heritage Centre to have them do a preliminary search and will see if they come up with anything...
