Hi, I am trying to trace my great great grandparents who I believe were originally from County Tipperary.  Edward Dalton and Margaret Organ were both born about 1836.  There is some doubt about the surname "Organ" as my g g grandmother was probably illiterate and I found the surname from my g grandmothers birth certificate which had been signed with a "X" so must have been completed by the registrar.  The family had a daughter named Hannah or Johanna whist in Ireland who I think was born about 1859.  Soon after the family moved to Wales, near Cardiff and they had 6 further children.

I have not been able to trace the family back to Ireland but in the 1871 Wales census Edward is down as being born in County Tipury which I have assumed is County Tipperary.  Later censuses just say Ireland for place of birth.

I would appreciate any thoughts on my ancestors and how I might get better success in tracing them.  Perhaps a visit to Ireland would help!

Thank you, Neil

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the marriage record in the Cashel RC church which is below and Margaret's surname was shown as Organ. Here is a link to the register page which has the September 12, 1858 marriage record.  http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632680#page/123/mode/1up

The Cashel RC records are not on Roots Ireland and I was unable to locate the baptismal record on Find My Past. The total register is here http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0253    You may want to search thru the 1859 baptismal rcords to see if you can find Hannah/Johanna Dalton.

  • Many thanks Roger.  Its a real step forward to find the marriage of Edward and Margaret in Cashel.  I have looked through the microfiche records for baptisms but have been unable to find Johanna or Hannah so far but as you will know the records are not easy to read.

As Edward and Margaret were married in Cashel is it likely they were born there?  I have a dubious record of a Margaret Organ being born in Carrick On Suir, which I have put in my family tree as a possible place of birth.  Could this be the same parish?  Not had much success tracing a birth or baptism for Edward though.

I am very proud of my Irish ancestry and wondered why the family moved to Wales.

    Kind regards, Neil

Hard to tell if Edward and Margaret were born in Cashel. Mariages usually occurred in the bride's parish so was likely from Cashel. Cashel and Carrick on Suir are not the same parish. If you go to this link for the Cashel parish register you will see a map of RC parishes in the upper right hand corner. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0253  If you move the map to the southeast, you will see Carrick on Suir to the southeast.

I'm sure they moved to Wales for a better job opportunity for Edward.
