My great great grandparents were Patrick Walsh and Mary Lewis, who married on February 8, 1824, in Cahir, officiated by Father Patrick McGrath.  They had 8 children who were baptized in parish Ardfinnan; Edmond 1825, Margaret 1827, Patrick 1829, John 1831, James 1833, Mary 1836, Margaret 1840, and Ellen 1844. My great grandfather, John, left for the states from Waterford in 1850, settling in the state of Illinois. I visited Ireland in 2014 and visited both Cahir and Ardfinan. I have communicated with some Walshes who may be related but have not been able to find a direct relationship,  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I hope to return within a few more years. Thanks - Pat Welsh

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We do not have a parish liaison for Ardfinnan parish but we have one for Cahir. Let me contact him and see if he can be of assistance.

  • Thanks so much Tom!

We had not seen the marriage record.  When was St Mary's built. If it was built after 1824 where would have the church have been.  Also, there is a James Walsh buried in St Mary's graveyard.  His wife was Mary Coffey and his birth year is a match to the James, who was my great grand father's brother born in 1833. I have found their marriage record but it does not list the groom's parents. I would appreciate any recommendation of how to proceed.  Thanks - Pat

  •    Gentleman - I have researched the birth record of Mary Lewis in 1797 in Mitchelstown and found her parents were Richard Lewis and Mary Manger.  Are there any records of them in the early 1800's in Cahir? Thanks - Pat

  • Hello Tom,

Following your recent trip back to Cahir you responded to the Lewis family of which many had emigrated to Australia.  There was a list of Lewis family members that had married in Cahir and the first was a Maria married in 1824.  She was my great great grandmother.  Where you able to gain any information of her or her line?  Thanks for your past help and any you may have now.

  • Hi, there are many facebook pgs. with people from certain areas of Ireland. so just go to FB and put one of the sections in that you are interested and see if there is a pg . you can join and see if anyone there can help you find people. There are also other FB pages such as reaching out of ireland, Irish Ancestry they will help you if they can. Just search Irish FB pgs.

  • Tom - Thanks so much for your reply!  Your suggestions of where Mary Lewis may have come from certainly would possible, as that would have put them closer to the Walsh families.  You have given me some hope that someday the mystery of what happened to my great grsndfather’s family may be solved - Thanks and I will eagerly wait for the findings from your next visit- Pat

  •  Tom,

Thanks so much for your recent response.  When I visited In 2014 we went to the church at Ballybacon that we assume they attended in Ardfinan.  The priest, P, Walsh, that baptized about half of the children is buried very close to the front door.  You also have brought another aspect to investigate and that is the fact that there were three Lewis families living in Curragh.  Is that just above the Ballybacon?  I found that there were several Walsh families living in Lodge which I believe is just south of the church.  Please keep in touch as we look for descendants of Patrick Walsh and Mary Lewis. - Pat
