My family anecdotal history is that our Melican name came from a John Melican who married into the large Hyde family of Co. Waterford around mid C19.  Despite long and patient searching of records, I can find no evidence of this.

Interested in talking with anyone studying the Hyde clan (big in Co. Cork and Co. Waterford) who has found a connection with  Melican, Hudson, or Steadman/Browne - all anecdotally Hyde (of Dungarvan) siblings - Bridget Hyde, Mary Hyde, and Norrie Hyde.

Thanks and best wishes

    Hello Nigel,

I found one possibility for you  but it is in Wexford. I will post it.

  • Thank you for this information, Geraldine.  I have not yet spread my net to Co. Wexford - looks like I should.  However, since I posted my question in May I have moved forward a long way with the Dungarvan Hydes way back way to my great, great, great, grandparents on the Hyde line (John Hyde x Elli Fraher), and my great, great, grandparents on the Melican line. (Edmund Melican x Catherine Mahony). It's fascinating to uncover these relations (and some of their secrets) - I can understand why people get hooked on genealogy.

    Best wishes, Nigel
