Hi, I'm new to this site and have been reading some wonderfully helpful comments in response to queries on this board so I have my fingers crossed that my query will fall across the right person.

I have only one lead into Ireland on my family tree. Denis Tomkins was born in Wexford around 1849 and married and had a child there - exact location unknown. The child was Kate (Catherine we have found) but Denis and his wife and daughter moved to Middlesbrough UK around 1871.

I have found in the 1851 census a listing of James and Ellen Tomkins with son Denis, living in Limerick Lane, Camolin, Co. Wexford.

I am not entirely sure of what denomination they were, only my mother remembers her mother saying her family was Catholic.

I cannot seem to find any reference to camolin or 'Ballyduff' which is listed as the Townland, along with Camolin Park.

Can anyone direct me to where I might find Parish information for this area so that I can progress further.

It's a little tricky from so far away (Australia) but we are planning a visit next year and would love to have more to go on.

Many thanks in advance!

Sally

  • Hi Sally

No luck with Denis's birth or marriage records on www.rootsireland.ie/

However on ancestry.com there is an entry from the Ireland Civil Registration Deaths Index 1864-1958 which has Denis Tomkins born abt 1851 & died March 1921 aged 70

    Registration District is GOREY

    http://0%7c0%7c0%7c0%7c5323%7c0%7c0%7c&cpxt=0&catBucket=rt&uidh=rg3&msydp=5&_83004003-n_xcl=f&cp=0&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=5861881&recoff=5+6&db=FSIrelandCivRegDeath&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1

A check of the Registration Districts of Ireland shows that Gorey, Wexford  contains Camolin and other parishes

Camolin is in the Diocese of Ferns and adjoins Gorey (map below)

    http://www.wexford.ie/wex/Departments/GIS/ParishMaps/Thefile,7207,en.pdf

Annoyingly I couldn't find Denis in the Irish Census of 1901 or 1911 (free online)

Camolin is not in the Townland or DED list either; there are a couple in BALLYCLOUGH

Similarly there are 14 Tomkins in Griffiths Valuation (1848-64 free online) but no mention of Camolin or Ballyduff

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=60&Submit.y=14&Submit=Submit&familyname=Tomkins&firstname=First+Name&baronyname=&countyname=WEXFORD&unionname=&parishname=

The Tithe Applotments (1823-37 & free) have only 2 Tomkins but both are in Wicklow.

  • The 1851 record mentioned is from a search in connection with an old age pension application by Denis in 1921, and his address at that time was Limerick Lane, Camolin. The other locations mentioned are the places he believed he should be found on the 1851 census, but the application was unsuccessful - see the note to the right of the form which read in part 'No family of Tomkiins found...', so Denis may have the location or his age incorrect.

    See : Pension Search Form

  • There's a Denis Tomkin and family in Camolin Town, age 52 in 1911, so estimated year of birth about 1859 and too late for that 1851 search used for the pension. He's transcribed as Thomkins on the 1901 return and reported age 46, so estimated year of birth c1855.

    see : Tomkin household, 1911  Tomkins/Thompkins household, 1901

Both Ballyduff and 'Camolin Park' are townlands, and adjacent, and both located in Kilcomb civil parish to the north west of Toome civil parish where the town of Camolin is located. There is also a House and Estate named Camolin Park, or Camolin Park Demesne, located in the townland of the same name.

Doesn't look like this family match with the details in your query though, as this Denis, his wife and all their children, including Kate, based on years of birth etc seem to have remained in Ireland, at least untill 1911, and Kate is still single at that time....

This reply may be off topic in this forum but I don't know where else to post it for Sally to see.  Sally Wynne's ancestor, Dennis Thumpkins was from Wexford town, not Camolin.  He married Margaret Hoole in a Catholic church in Wexford on June 11th, 1866.  The witneses were William and Ellen Tucker.  They had two children: a boy called James, born April 26th, 1867, doesn't appear in later records and probably died in infancy; a girl, batized Kate but registered in the civil register as Mary was born on November 15th, 1869.   The couple were both born in Wexford town;  Dennis was the son of James Thumpkin and his wife Ann Doyle while Margaret was the daughter of William Hoole and Eliza Murphy(the name is spelled Whoole on her baptismal entry).  James was born about 1810, possibly the son of Dennis Tompkin who was living in John Street in 1834, and died in 1872.  I don't know where he lived, unless the James Thunton who was living in Back Streett(now Mallin Street)in 1853 is him and I don't know where he's buried.  William Hoole, who was born about 1825, worked as a labourer in Wexford town.  He doesn't appear in Griffith's Valuation, but Nicholas Hoole of Back Street is almost certainly a relative.  He was living in Cornmarket, Wexford, when he died in May, 1898.  He is buried in St. John' Graveyard at the corner of John Street and John's Gate Street.
