Back to List

My great grandfather was Anthony William Carroll who was born in 1821 in Lisronagh (Tipperary) to Patrick Carroll and Alice Neville.  Anthony's siblings were John (b.1815), Mary (b.1817), Patrick (b.1819, married Johann O'Brien),  Philip F. (b. 1823), Denis C. (b. 1825), Michael (b.1826), John (b.1829), Ann (b. 1831), Richard (b 1833) and James (b. 1835).  Patrick Carroll and Alice Neville were farmers in Baptistgrange Townland near Lisronagh.  All of their children were baptized in the Catholic church in Powerstown Parish. The baptismal sponsors included Andrew Shea, Ellen Kennedy, James Connor, Elene Brit, Patrick Neville, Mary Quinn, Walter & Marie Cantwell, Denis Carroll, Hanna Dunn, John Carroll, Katheryn Quinn, Michael Neville, Bridget Cormuck, Edmund Kennedy, Lana Fitzgerald, Thomas Kennedy, Bridget Casey, Nicholas Kennedy, Mary Prindergast, William Kennedy, Mary Keane, Patrick Kennedy and Bridget Wall.

Anthony emigrated to Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1849 and married Bridget Carey (b. 1827 in Tipperary, parents were William Carey and Catherine/Alice Nagle) the same year. After a few years, they settled in Mount Pleasant Township, Green County Wisconsin, and became farmers.  At least four of Anthony's siblings (Philip, Denis, Michael and John) also emigrated to the US in the mid 1850's, all settling in Green County Wisconsin,. They were all intially farmers, however several eventually became storekeepers. No information has been found for the other siblings, however there is a family assumption they remained in Ireland.

Anthony and Bridget had seven children, all whom were born in Green County, including John (b. 1854), William Anthony (b.1858), Alice (b.1861), Mary Ann (b.1863), Anthony Francis (b.1866), Katherine (b.1867) and Dennis (b.1868). All their sons were farmers in Green County, and Katherine was a teacher.  Anthony and Bridget both died on the family farm in Mount Pleasant Township, Green County Wisconsin, with Bridget dying in 1899 and Anthony in 1901. The family farm is still owned and operated by descendents of Anthony Carroll and Bridget Carey.
