Bartholomew “Barthy” Ford or FORDE 1830

Back to List

Bartholomew FORD, My 2x great grandfather was born in County Mayo in 1830. He immigrated to Pennsylvania and married Sarah Mahon.  Sarah's mother, Sarah or Sally NEWCOMB and her father Patrick Maughan or Mahon were also born in County Mayo.  Sally and Patrick  married in Kilfian ( or Kierglen Parish, not sure of the spelling) in March 1st 1832). They then immigrated to Pennsylvania where Patrick owned a farm.

Bartholomew worked as an Anthracite coal miner in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania until his death in 1860.  He was the oldest miner still working in Pennsylvania.  His wife Sarah became blind and spent several months at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.  They taught her how to take care of herself and her family of 9 children.  While she was away, her sister Catherine stayed with the family to help care for the children.  My great grandmother was named after Sarah's sister.

I am trying to find more information on Bartholomew's family since I do not know what parish he may have come from, it has been difficult.  Barthy and Sarah had the following children all born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania  Frank John Ford, Clara A. Ford, Thomas J. Ford, Catherine June Ford, who is my great grandmother, Elizabeth Ford, Mary Agnes Ford, Joseph Ford, James Ford, and Rose Ford .  I included them since they may have followed Irish naming patterns.
