  • Hi , I found Bridgets Marriage as you said in Catholic parish Knockaville.   address given for Bridget was Gurtussa Lower, in Civil parish Ballintemple.

There were no Maddens in this townland in Griffiths Valuation, There was a family of Maddens in Townland Kilpatrick, civil Parish Kilpatrick , Catholic  parish Anacarty, John,s address given as Ballinahinch, in civil parish Oughterleague Catholic parish Knockavilla, No Clearys there in Griffiths, one family in Dangandargin, Golden Catholic parish,  The witnesses Denis and Btyan Reilly were in Gurtussa lower Anne Gooley may have been from Ballagh.

Do you know where the family may have been buried

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Christina,

The only Madden burial place that I have been able to locate is in Kilpatrick Cemetry but there's no reference to the townsland of Gurtussa on the remaining headstones and the dates and names would be more recent than the time period I'm researching. I also have family interred in Ballintemple, Clonoulty and Ardmayle and there are no Maddens recorded in these cemeteries.

My hunch is that all the Maddens in the general Dundrum / Annacarty area belong to the one extended family as it doesn't appear to have been an overly common surname and any I have found with the name are only a couple of miles apart.
It is my hope that others researching Maddens maybe able to provide some more information.

The only other records I have found for Maddens in Gurtussa are for another Bridget and two Michael Maddens; I'm guessing the other Bridget and Michael in Gurtussa may have been first cousins of my GGG grandmother Bridget as my Bridget married in 1841 and the second Bridget married a Denis Carroll in 1843.

One Michael Madden in Gurtussa married a Bridget Trihy and they had a son William born in Gurtussa in 1843. Whats interesting for me is that William's godfather was Jeremiah Hurley and I'm fairly confident that this is my GGG grandfather on my great grandmother's side; the Hurleys lived in Glenough which is not far from Gurtussa.

Furthermore the marriage record for the second Michael Madden gives his address as Glenough and he married Bridget Hurley of Glenough in 1840; they had least two children who were actually born in Gurtussa Julian in 1841 and Thomas in 1845. Bridget Hurley is either my GGG aunt or a first cousin of my GGG grandfather Jeremiah.

The grave in Kilpatrick refers to a large family of Maddens in Bishopswood pertaining to a Patrick Madden and a Julia Lanigan who married in 1857.
If I recall right from looking through records, I think the Lanigans were from Bishopswood originally so it's possible that Patrick maybe connected to the Gurtussa Maddens as Gurtussa is a townland between Bishopswood and Kilpatrick and that he set up home in Bishopswood once he met Julia?

So you see, more than one Madden family connection in my tree and lots of little nuggets of information has me very eager to learn more about them. It's quite likely that I'm at a stage in my research where snippets of family information from any surviving descendants of the Maddens might be my best bet for throwing some light on family connections?

    Thanks for your help.

    Fiona.

  • Hi Fiona,  Did you look for possible baptism in Anacarty, records on line from 1823, but available locally since 1805.

Yes Madden very scarce name in the area, Did you find obituary  for Bridget Cleary from the General Registry Office.

There is a headstone for Bryan  Reilly and a lot of Reilly,s in Kilpatrick, I am hoping  to maybe get  obituary,s for them as I have reason to believe they may be related to me,  Ballintemple was recorded  but is not on line you were lucky to find headstone ins for there.  I am interested in  marriage of Denis Carroll 1843, Carrolls in the area in my ancestry, not fuly researched yet.  The Bridget Trihy/Trehy  I also find interesting, my GGM   Margaret Trehy was born in the parish of Anacarty in   1833,  Also there were Hurleys in Glenough, I have a lot of research done in Glenough, as my GGGF  Wm Ryan owned land with the Hurleys, they were there in 1901  and 11 census, I,ve been told they were there until recently.  Trehy a very scarce name, but I have most of them documented.  Yes the Lanigans were from Bishopswood to the best of my knowledge they are still there.   .  Fiona  I exchanged material re Taylor,s Lisloran with you last year, via my Irelandxo email address.  I am goung to send you email now
