Migrated to/Born in USA

Catherine Donoghue immigrated ca. 1845.  It could have been earlier. She married Francis "Frank" Hanratty and had her first child, my 3rd Great-Grandmother, Mary Ann Catherine Hanratty, at about 18 years old.

Mary died at age 30, and Catherine raised my 2nd Great-Grandmother, Katherine "Katie" Sweet on her own, as her husband had also passed away by then (1865).

If Catherine was 64 at the time of death, she would have been born before 22 March 1833, possibly and probably in 1832.  Since all the Catherine Donoghue's born in 1833 were after 22 March 1833, she couldn't have been any of them.  In 1832 there are four Catherine Donoghue's listed for County Kerry.  I checked mine, my mom's and my uncle's matches against any of the mother's maiden names with no return except for one- The family listed is Bartholomew Donoghue and Catherine Murphy and after more research, they had five children (Florentius b. December 1824, Bridgidam b. 1822, Johanum b. 1827, Bartholomus b. July 1836, and Catherinam b. 28 August 1832).  I have many Murphy matches both maternally and paternally.  However, the closest matches are that of 3-4th cousins and all those for the three of us show shared matches to one or both of my mom's second cousins who also descend from this line.  I wonder if this is her family???!  They were all from Cloghereen, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. ????

Any and all help to find out who my Catherine Donoghue's family was in Ireland would be wonderfully appreciated, especially if you are related to any of these people!  Catherine died 22 March 1897 of heart-related issues, which is a strong hereditary trait in our family.  She was only 64 years old.  As far as I know, Mary was the only one of her children with descendants, as both Cecilia and Frank died too young.  Cecilia had two children, but both died as young children.

My extended family are her only descendants.

New Type IMMIGRATION- Her death certificate mentions she had lived in Algiers since she was about 12 years old. My assumption is she immigrated around ca. 1845 if she moved directly there at the time of immigration. I am unsure who she came with if anyone.

  • Through two newspaper articles, a will, and the full passenger list of the Roscuis ship in 1845, I have found that Catherine came to America with her sister, Elizabeth Donoghue.  They were 12 and 13 respectively.  I have been able to trace Elizabeth's family in America as well which lines up with what info I've recently discovered, but cannot figure out who they are in Ireland.  The four or so families that I thought lined up with possibilities for Catherine, do not include a sister named Elizabeth.  Of course, I know that sometimes first and middle names are used interchangeably.  There seems to be another Elizabeth Donoghue (spelled incorrectly as Donnohow) age 60 (abt. 1790 birth) living with Elizabeth and her husband's family in the 1850 US Census.  There is also an Ellen Donohue, age 16, listed as a servant from Ireland in that same census in their household... so maybe a niece or cousin?  I did find an Eliza Donohue who sailed from Ireland on the ship Wisconsin on 23 August 1848 through Liverpool to arrive in New York and stay in the USA with a birth year of 1788.  I'm wondering if this is the "Elizabeth Donnohow" listed on that 1850 Census.

If any of these names and details sound familiar, please reach out to me!  Even through DNA and mtDNA, I have had no luck finding my family in Ireland.

  • By the way, the Elizabeth Donoghue I believe to be my Catherine Donoghue's sister married first (really young- maybe 17 or so) a Martin Hagans and had a daughter named Elizabeth Marta.  She then married Marx "Mark" Mine and had 7 more children.
