Charles McCarthy was born late 1854 or Jan. 1855 as his christening date was 21 Jan. 1855, the son of Owen and Catherine McCarthy of Dunmanway, Cork.
His siblings were Ellen, Justin, Catherine, and Denis.Later information says that Owen was the Anglicised versin of Eugene, the name his father was usually known by.
In 1878 he emigrated to Napier ,New Zealand.
On 13 Oct. 1883 he married Mary McMahon nee Meehan in Napier. They had 7 children: Catherine (1884-1885), Charles Joseph ( 1885-1960), Eugene Dominic ( 1887-1918),Mary Helena ( 1888-1960), Justin Francis ( (1890- 1915), John Patrick ( 1892- 1965) and Margaret ( 1895- 1984) all born in Napier. He worked as a carter and labourer.
