Finn Family

My 3rd great  grandfather was Denis Finn born c1778 in Ireland. He had 5 children Patrick, Dennis,  Margaret, Mary and Ann (not sure about Ann) his wife was Jane Unknown. They came out as convicts, Denis and Dennis Jnr on the "Vincent" and Jane on the "Margaret". Patrick came out in 1849 also a convict on the "Earl Grey". Jane's native place is Enniscarthy B:c1784 and Denis B:c1778 possibly the same place as Jane. We do not know who his parents were or if he had siblings and may never know but would like to try one more time. Jane's last name would be great to know as well. We do not know what happened to the 3 girls either. I have found info saying that Margaret married William Ryan (not sure if this is true) and she had a daughter and came out to Australia when William was sent out as a convict.

Patrick B: c1817    Mary B: c1820    Dennis B:1/1/1823  Margaret May B: c1825 and Ann B: 21/12/1828 all in Tullow County Carlow I was able to get some dates from the church records but not all of them, they lived in "The Green" way back then. Denis, Dennis and Jane were tried in Wexford. This picture was done by a Police officer using the information from his  Convict records.

I have possibly found Jane's last name due to DNA testing from a cousin who's last name is Cherry or McCherry from that timeline.

I also have  Finns from Carlow.

Hope someone can help with some information

Thanking You    Dale

  • Bridget Finn, my gr. grandmother's parents were Bridget (Connor/s) and Dennis Finn. Bridget was b about 1845, her brothers, Austin, b 1836 and Martin, b 1838. We think they lived in Ennistymon, Co Clare. Martin emigrated to Australia and Austin went to Australia and then New Zealand. Bradget joined her brother, Austin, in New Zealand. After much searching, we still know nothing about our Irish ancestors. Was our Dennis Finn part of this family? I would love to hear from someone. Email ivanbarb2014@gmail.com

  • I am glad you included the note about the photo, Dale, because I was wondering about it all the way to the end of your second paragraph.  How nice to have such a great way to visualize what your ggg grandfather may have looked like!  Although you have identified missing information in your post, you also have a great many pieces already in place.  Here's hoping you will find some good leads and links through this forum.

I wish you well with your research.

  • I wonder if they of these Finns are related to the Finns in my Ancestory?  We also have a Dennis/Denis Finn who was born to a John Finn and they appear to be from Wicklow area, Dunlavin. All are from the 1815-1825 era.

So many of the names are duplicated due to traditional naming of children, it can make it difficult to trace family membes, as I have found many "John Finn"(s) in my research.

    Gluck!

Denis Finn from Carlow was 5' 5.5" tall . Religion Catholic. Sailed on the St Vincent and arrived early 5 January 1837. He was tried at Wexford and sentenced to 7 years. Apparently He stole a cloak. Denis junior (1825) was 12 years old and accompanied him.

    Before Denis' arrival:

Patrick Finn b1817, from Carlow was on the Earl Gray arriving in NSW on New Year’s Eve 1836, serving 7 years for stealing a promissory note.

  • Wow tons of great info there! Will have to sort through the Denis (Dennis Finn(s) and see if one fits the times.

John Finn (Born 1791) Married Lucy (Lucey) Drew (Born in 1801)  Both are buried here in Canada, they arrived approximately . The Denis Finn I am researching was born to them.

Denis Finn was the son of John Finn and Lucey (Lucy) Drew, married before 1821 in Ireland. Denis (Dinnis) Finn son of John & Lucy Finn was born in 1823 in Wicklow Ireland.

Denis Married Mary Doyle (Born 1827), Daughter of Laurent (Laurence) Doyle and Marie, also in Ireland.

    Thank you!

If I were a wagering kinda soul... I could see Denis and Jane fitting into my family tree, possible parents of John Finn who came to Canada or a relative of his.

The Church that held information on my family, burnt and no records left, sadly, so John Finn and Lucey were the end of the road.

    Best Regards!

  • So good to know others are searching for Denis Finn. I was hopeful when reading your posts as I have come to a brick wall but I can't see any connections so far.

Our Denis must have married about early 1830s Bridget Connor(s) and had 3 chn, Austin, b 1836, Martin, b 1838 and Bridget, b 1845. There may have been other chn. These three came to Australia / New Zealand in the late 1850s and early 1860s. No BMD  records have been found for Bridget, Denis or their chn in Ennistymon where we believe they lived. The only record we have is what is written on Austin, Martin and Bridget's death records in Australia / New Zealand. Has qnyone any suggestions?
