Denis Roughan, born c.1827 in Co. Clare, went to Australia in the early 1850's settling in Victoria and worked on most of the goldfields in that state. He left Melbourne 14 Sep 1861 with his brother John on the "ss Oscar" for Port Chalmers, Otago and was a goldminer for a number of years in the Tuapeka district before becoming a farmer there about 1866. Denis died 16 May 1912 in Lawrence, aged 85 years. His death certificate states his father as Michael Roughan and mother as Winifred Corbett. He married Bridget Joyce, a native of Co. Galway, 2 Aug 1866 in Dunedin, and had four sons and two daughters.

John Roughan, brother of Denis, born c.1829 in Co. Clare, landed in Adelaide in 1855 and worked his way to Melbourne in 1857. After following goldmining until 1866  he became a farmer and then in 1872 a hotelkeeper at Lawrence. John died 11 Sep 1911 in Lawrence, aged 82 years. His death certificate omits his father's name but has his mother as Winifred Corbett. He married Margaret O'Brien, a native of Co. Limerick, 27 Nov 1866 in Dunedin, and had five sons and one daughter.

In the Tulla, Co. Clare Parish Register a John Roughan was baptised 21 June 1829, father Martin Roughan, mother ? Corbett. In the same parish a Mary was baptised Mar 1926, father Michael Rohan, mother Anne Corbett of the townland of Clondana. Also a Michael was baptised 22 May 1836, father Michael Roughan, mother Ann Corbett of the townland of Clondana.
