Edward was born in Clonenagh and Clonagheen, and baptised in Cappinrush in 1837. He was the son of John Fitzpatrick and Mary Brophy. His siblings were Dennis, Patrick, John, James, Elizabeth, and Thomas.  He arrived in the United States in 1855 and settled in New Britain, Hartford, Connecticut. He first married Mary Hayes who died in childbirth. His second wife was Catherine Dooley also from Laois whom he married in 1863. Previous to his second marriage he served in the US Civil War. His military service was between 12 August 1861 and 23 October 1862 • C Co 1st Connecticut Cavalry and afterwards C Co. 2nd Cavalry Regiment New York. He was wounded in the 2nd battle of Bull Run and recovered in Judiciary Hospital in Washington, D.C. He received a pension due to his injuries. He died 3 August 1917 in New Britain.
