Edward Keegan (Alias Robert) my GG Grandfather b. 1809 Longford Ireland (Convict). He was transported to Australia, from Cork on the "Lady Kennaway"arriving in 1835. Married Joanna Barnett in Ardagh Diocese, 14/11/1832 and left Joanna and a daughter behind in Ireland.

His father was Thomas Keegan a farmer at Ballymacormick and mother Catherine Ward.

He had brothers Joannem (John) b. 1813 and Pat b. 1820, both at Parish Templemichael,  Ardagh Diocese.

Any info of his mum and dad and brothers would be appreciated and also if the family had connection to Pat M'Eagan, 1591 at what is now known as Ballymakeegan.

Col Keegan

  • Hi Col,

you know more than I do about the family, but as your distant cousin I just wanted to say hi and thanks for posting as now I know a little more. Edward Robert Keegan is my 4th Great Grandfather and I am descended from his second wife Julia Muldoon or Reilly or O'Reilly and their daughter Mary Ann.

Will be keeping an eye on any replies here,

    Heather

  • Hi Cousin Heather. I also am a descendant of Edward and Julia down the line of Mary Ann’s brother John Thomas. My paternal fathers are Edward > John Thomas > Joshua > Lionel > me. I have not found much about Edward’s mum and dad in Ballymacormick, but through YDNA testing have come up with an elderly Keegan match in New York who appears to be descended from one of Edward’s brothers, John or Pat. My email is keeg@optusnet.com.au should you wish to drop me a line. Regards Col K

  • Thanks. Julia seems more of a mystery than Edward. From Ancestry.com family trees I think her birthplace is Virginia, Ireland. However without even knowing her maiden name for certain it's hard to check. Do you know anything further, for example if she was a convict or a 'free settler'?

  • Hi Heather, I have done unsuccessful search for Julia in Virginia, County Cavan. What is doing my head in is that she was born there in 1820, died in Murrurundi 1848 married to Edward Keegan, but the following from My Heritage and other sources has the two names - Muldoon / O'Rielly??????

Robert married Julia KEEGAN (born MULDOON O'RIELLY) on month day 1844, at age 35 at marriage place.

Julia was born in 1820, in Virginia, Cavan, Ireland.

  • I wondered if she had been married before, so one surname was her birth name and the other her first husband's surname. Otherwise she may have had an unwed mother and used both her mother's surname and her father's surname or had a father and a step father and used both their surnames. Or she may have been a convict and had more than one name. Apparently convict women sometimes changed their names to distance themselves from the shame of their criminal past.  I have a convict Irish female ancestor who had an alias before she was arrested and went by a number of variations of her first name as well! But knowing that doesn't help us find out Julia's family history, unfortunately!
