Back to List

Edward McFadden possible birth year about 1804. He married Alice Collum who may have been born about 1804 as well.  They likely lived in Falcarragh, Donegal and were Roman Catholic.

They had three children born in Ireland:

Margaret birth date unknown. She married a Manus Ferry possibly in Ireland or Ohio, USA.

John born about 1842, died in US Civil War in 1863.

Dennis born about 1844. He may have been born in Cloughaneely, Co. Donegal.

At some point they all immigrated to the US and settled in Ohio just before Ireland began keeping many records. It is believed Margaret came first then the others arrived after but I have no evidence of this. Edward, Alice, John and Dennis first appearance in the US historical record is in the 1860 US Census for Vinton County, Ohio.

One family story suggests that during the potato famine John and Dennis left Ireland together as part of program by Donegal called "Free Emigration" where children between the ages of 12 and 13 were able to go to America if someone there was able to sign for them. I've not found anything that verifies such a program ever existed.

  • My great grandmother may have been related to Edward listed above. Her name was Unity McFadden born near Falcarragh, Donegal circa December 1828, the daughter of Briget Gallagher McFadden and Daniel? McFaddin. Unity emigrated to Philadelphia circa 1850 and was accompanied by her mother Briget. Unity Married Charles Cooney, also of Donegal in  St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Blair County Altoona, PA, USA and settled in nearby Cambria County, PA. I see no evidence of her father emigrating to the USA. His name was listed on Unity's marriage record as Danielem (Latin). I am on Ancestry and am coming to Donegal within months. Could Edward be Unity's uncle?  There were several Unity and Edward McFaddens' listed in the Griffith's Evaluation of 1857. Hopefully they are relatives of Unity.

  • Hello MJ,

There could be a relationship between Edward and Unity. Unfortunately, I have not found anything yet. I'm planning on visiting Ireland in October, so hopefully I can find something or at least a hint to look into.

  • Hi MJ -

Have you DNA tested? If so, have you uploaded to GedMatch.org?  It is free and allows members to compare their tests against others from all testing companies.

There are also groups on Facebook where many of us from the area compare trees and DNA tests, if available.

I've been researching many DNA matches and have found so many McFaddens, Ferrys, Collums/McCollums....please check out the groups above and you'll most definitely make some connections.  (If you're not a FB member, it, too, is free and easy to join and you can protect your privacy.)

Hope to see you posting soon!
    Regards,

    Sue
