Elizabeth was born on 10 July 1879 in Aughrim, County Wicklow (civil parish of Ballykine) to Matthew Hyland and Bridget Graham. Her father was a mason.
Known as Lizzie, she grew up in house sixteen in Aughrim Lower. The house had three small rooms and two front windows and by 1901, the roof was slated. Her father, like many others in Wicklow, rented it from the Earl of Meath.

Lizzie became a dressmaker in her late teens and helped her family pay their rent.
On 1 March 1905, she married Andrew Belton of Rathdrum, witnessed by her sister Sarah and Laurence Murphy. Andrew was a painter like her brother William. They went to live at 4 Brewery Lane, a second class house much like the one she spent her childhood in. Andrew rented it from Earl Fitzwilliam.

Lizzie's sister Sarah spent some time living with them in Rathdrum. Her daughter Annie lived with Matthew and Bridget for a few years also.
She died on 2 Dec 1953, aged seventy four, in the presence of her husband.
