Florence J. McCarthy was born 26 Apr 1832 in Ballynamuddagh, Duagh, Co. Kerry, the 5th of 9 children of Callaghan McCarthy and his wife Mary. Mary and her children emigrated to the US about 1849-1852. Florence settled in Pennsylvania, and married Mary Millan (Millane) who had emigrated from Co. Clare in 1853. Their marriage took place on 9 Apr 1855 in Blair Co., Pennsylvania. Florence worked as a carpenter, blacksmith, and wagonmaker for coal-mining companies, in Huntingdon Co., Clearfield Co. and Somerset Co. He and Mary had 8 children of whom 6 survived. Mary died in 1875, and in 1879 Florence married a widow Margaret Kenney Morgan, and had 4 more children. Florence played the fiddle, and all of his children named one of their children in his honor. Florence served in the US Civil War with the New York Heavy Artillery and the New York Mounted Rifles as a mechanic and a stable orderly. He was injured at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, in 1864, when his horse fell on him, leaving him with a lifelong limp.
