George Henry Bethel born 27 Oct 1860 in the town of Portumna, County Galway, Ireland was the son of George Bethel who was born 1809 d 1884 in Portumna and Anne b 1814 d 1866 in Portumna. Both George and his Father George were Painters. George left Ireland for America after his father died, arriving in California and moved to Oregon in 1887. George married Elizabeth Fruend in 1898 and died in 1916 in Salem Oregon. George had a brother, William Bethel who died in Portumna 21 Aug 1889 and a brother Richard 1843-1891 who died in England, and a brother Thomas Waldron Bethel born 15 Nov 1841, who left for America long before George arriving 1866 and living the rest of his life as a police officer in California until he died 30 July 1912 in San Francisco, California.

    both Ann and her husband George Bethel are burried in the church that is kitty corner to the Large Catholic church in Down town

    if there is anybody who can assist with information regarding the Bethel families past or present  in Portumna or their ancestors i would greatly appreciate it and would love to  chorespond.,
