  • My grandmother is a Ryan.  Her father, Ed came as a child to the U.S. in the late 1800s was the youngest of 3 boys.  His mother died shortly after arriving to the U.S. and their father had to send them to live in Montreal with aunts.  Later the brothers lived in Boston.  Do you know if Hanora had a a brother who left for America with his wife and 3 sons?

  • Hello M. O'Herlihey,

My great-grandmother Hanora Ryan had four brothers: William (bap. 24 Aug 1845-Bef. 1918), Michael (?-Bef. 1918), Patrick (Bap. 24 Jan 1852-?), and John (bap. 26 Jun 1854). William and Michael are mentioned in the obituary of their brother John, who emigrated to San Francisco. However, except for John, I've been unable to trace any of them. Since Hanora, Bridget, and John all moved to the U.S., it seems like the others would have emigrated here as well. Hanora and her children left Cappamore in 1889. She spent a couple of years in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada before moving to Chicago, and then San Francisco. If I'm considering names, Edward or Ed is not among them. The males all seem to be named William, Michael, Thomas or John, or occasionally Patrick.

Do you know the townland of your Ryan family? Mine lived in Turagh and Cappamore.

On RootsIreland I looked for an Edward Ryan born 1845-1860 and found one. He was baptised in Cappamore on 22 Jan 1856; his parents were John Ryan and Margaret McNamara, while the sponsors were John McNamara and Anne Loughlin. Another Edward Ryan baptised on 5 May 1871 in Cappamore was the son of John and Margaret Ryan; the Sponsors were Edward Byron and Margaret Kennedy.

    Hope this information helps.

    Sincerely,

    Elizabeth Byrne
